Dear Colleagues,

Our Department Chair Council (DCC) at SRJC has no official role in our shared governance structures or processes. I am seeking resources to share with my DCC faculty colleagues in support of their decision making as to whether or not they should become an Academic Senate subcommittee.

I briefly highlighted pros and cons with them at their last meeting, and they now wish to more formally consider the topic. I'll be recording a presentation for them, and then following up after to answer questions.

I'm looking for resources from which to draw and also to share such as slide decks, PDFs, and any other documents you know of that highlight the advantages of being an Academic Senate committee. Any and all resources are most welcome.

Thank you for your time and energy, and I appreciate the resources of this google group!

In Solidarity,

Hi John,
This is a great question and idea.  My impression has always been that department chairs often are seen as "mini deans" (by the administration for sure, and often chairs see themselves in this way).  Our district also focuses a lot on chair duties in our contract - so the job is very centered on adminstrative tasks.  I like the idea of chairs being more associated with the 10+1 way of thinking than the administrative way of thinking, so I'm quite interested in how this conversation shakes out!

Hi John
While our DCC at Los Angeles City College has no official role in shared Governance we do involve chairs greatly. The Chair of Chairs is on the Senate Executive committee. At consultation with our College President it is the Senate President and Chair of chairs who consult. Our Academic Senate is large every dept is represented by their chair and a proportionate number of Senators depending on the amount  of faculty in the dept. our DCC itself is only for passing and sharing of information between chairs. The only formal action item they perform is to elect a new Chair of Chairs every two years.
