In the Los Angeles district, students who receive substandard grades may repeat the same class and, through a simple administrative process, not have that substandard grade as part of their cumulative grade point average. However, students who do not need the class to complete their program of study may still petition to have those substandard grades not be a part of the cumulative GPA through a process called academic renewal.
To qualify for an academic renewal, students must have achieved a GPA of 2.5 in their last 15 semester units or 2.0 in their last 30 semester units, and at least 2 calendar years must have elapsed from the time the course work to be removed was completed. (This last portion is being changed to 1 calendar year.) There is a cap of 18 semester units for the academic renewal process.
There is discussion about modifying the unit cap in the LACCD especially in light of anticipated financial aid, fee waiver, and other repercussions anticipated through SB 1456/SSSP, as students who are on probation for two consecutive semester would be in danger of losing financial assistance and priority registration.
As this issue has the potential to affect many of our community college students, would you please take a few moments to respond to some questions below by September 30th? I will be happy to share any data collected. Thank you.
Does your college have a process similar to the academic renewal? If so, what is it?
Is there a unit cap? If so, how many units are eligible for this process?
Are changes being discussed? If so, what are they?
If you happen to know. how many/what percentage of your students are on academic/progress probation?
Thanks again.
