Hi all, this message is cross-posted. I'll send a response roundup next week.

I'm looking for resource recommendations on using student feedback to improve OER - something practical that instructors can use to improve instructional design as they iterate their course. Ideally something with examples that would be easy for a busy community college instructor to apply... does this exist?

Here's a few resources that we've already considered:

- The OER Research Toolkit from the Open Education Group has lots of ideas and examples. Mainly, however, the focus is on institution-wide assessment. (There are a few recent research articles focused on one course that have some specific information about questions asked to students.)
- Iowa State's OER Starter Kit has a section on assessment (references the RISE framework).
- Instructional designer at your own institution.
- Faculty colleagues at your own institution who are doing a great job of collecting and using student feedback in their courses that use OER.

Thanks!
Amy

Hi Amy

You might find Textbook Evaluation Toolkit (Christopher Hale, Ian McDermott, Steven Ovadia, all from CUNY La Guardia Community College) helpful. https://academicworks.cuny.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1072&context=lg_oers

Have a great day,

Hi all, I received one resource recommendation and one suggestion.

***

The Textbook Evaluation Toolkit from LaGuardia Community College: https://academicworks.cuny.edu/lg_oers/72/

***

One option is to include an optional survey question with each learning module that solicits anonymous student feedback. The question I include is:

Consider the lesson content, module design, and instructional approach. What change or changes could be made to improve your learning experience for this session?

These are heavily used by students early in the course, and occasionally used later as students have suggestions and concerns. I review the responses weekly, make improvements where I can, and provide better explanations when the requested improvements aren't consistent with the targeted course outcomes.

Thanks!
Amy

Amy,

We've been using an approach where we copy all course content into Google Docs, grant the public "Suggesting" permissions (similar to turning on Change Tracking in Word), and then link the bottom of every page of course content to the corresponding Google doc via an invitation to improve the page. This has generated lots of feedback from students (and faculty) that we've been able to use to improve our OER. We've also added an Acknowledgments section in the course introduction to recognize everyone who's made a contribution (for example, see https://courses.lumenlearning.com/waymaker-psychology/chapter/about-this-course/).

You can see the approach implemented at the bottom of any page of course content here - https://courses.lumenlearning.com/waymaker-psychology/

Let me know if you have any questions.

David
