Abstract

How do open practitioners navigate the weaponization of the platforms that support open educational pedagogies? How do we make sense of the current forces attempting to shape what learning and knowledge mean in our classrooms? How do we distinguish between tools of power and tools of knowledge? This talk will provide an overview of a decade of digital enclosure and the hype surrounding GenAI in higher education, and offer practical pathways for fostering agency, belonging, and participatory educational values.

Presenter Bio

Dr. Bonnie Stewart is a longtime educator and digital researcher whose work in participatory learning has spanned all eras of the web. As Associate Professor of Online Pedagogy and Workplace Learning in the University of Windsor's Faculty of Education, Bonnie explores the implications of digital information ecosystems for institutions and society. Bonnie was an early MOOC researcher and ethnographer of Twitter as an academic environment, and currently investigates what it means to know, to learn, and to belong - at the human level, with agency - in an era increasingly marked by digital automation and weaponization.

Abstract

We're getting something wrong. Despite our efforts to be inclusive in the classroom, we're still missing something. We still have students who do not enjoy the benefits of inclusion in learning environments. What can we do as pedagogues to design the conditions where students can learn and thrive in their own ways? Let's explore an approach that aims to foster transformative learning by acknowledging individual uniqueness, empowering student voices, embracing complexity, and de-centering the pedagogue, ultimately leading to a more equitable and humanized educational experience.
