Trattato dell’Alcibra Amuchabile (anonimo): A Guided Translation

Gary Towsley & Olympia Nicodemi

Milne Library Publishing at SUNY Geneseo is pleased to announce the publication of Trattato dell’Alcibra Amuchabile (anonimo): A Guided Translation by Gary Towsley and Olympia Nicodemi, both of whom are Geneseo Mathematics Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeriti. This open access text presents a guided translation of a fourteenth-century Italian pre-modern algebra text originally written in the Tuscan dialect of Italian. Like all the algebra written in Italy at the time, it was inherited from al-Khwarizmi and, like his, written with no symbols—no x’s, y’s, plus signs, etc.—in what is sometimes called “rhetorical algebra.” This translation is faithful to that idiom and keeps the rhythms of the original Italian.

In addition to the translation, the book includes historical background on pre-modern algebra, annotations, exercises, and excerpts from related medieval sources. The volume expands access to important primary source material in the history of mathematics and supports teaching and learning in History of Mathematics courses.
