Critical Perspectives of AI, facilitated by Bryan Dewsbury and Karen Cangialosi

Mon, April 27, 3:00pm ET

Description:

When a technology can reconstruct and create any reality including false ones, what and how we teach matters, because teaching to a large extent relies on an a prior agreed upon basic reality that we work to improve upon. When the ground beneath that reality shifts, what should be the spine of the education model? In this session, we take a step back to consider the broader contexts, the range of concerns, the generative possibilities and the possible negative impacts of the rapid infiltration of AI into education.

We will consider questions such as: How do we come to terms with the harms (environmental, ethical) perpetuated by AI as it is currently built and deployed? How might the rise of AI force us to more deeply reflect on and perhaps prioritize the humanity of our teaching? How might we consider the appropriate roles for the things that AI can and cannot do? For example, Sean Cho writes: “What it can’t do is sit in a room full of people who are trying—and failing—to make sense of something that maybe can’t be made sense of." How do we create a foundation of ethical and responsible consideration of AI use with our students, not by policing, but by centering values, and building trust and community in our classrooms?  Join us for a thought provoking discussion!

Let me know if you have any questions and hope to see you there!
