Our benefactor at union station has a new gig so we will need to re-schedule the event. Sorry every one. And our website is down. We're working on it 😀.

Cheers!

Sorry y'all, I've been so preoccupied with the transition I forgot we set a date. Tomorrow is my last day at work. I've taken a position with Ultimaker as a Community Strategist. I'll be traveling from Jan 23 - Feb 2. I meant to announce this another way. :)

I still think we should do it each month, didn't mean to notch this one, you should still meet!

Until then, check out the Ultimaker 2+! www.ultimaker.com

Hey Luis
Fact: SecKC (a registered 501c3) needs a Ultimaker 2+ donated to our group.

=)

CCCKC could definitely use an Ultimaker 2 Go for our community outreach program (also a 501c3). It would help us a lot to become more mobile with our outreach.  :-)   Congrats Luis...would love to hear the details of your new adventure.

Thanks!

I wonder how they'd make money giving all those printers away!? :)

So Luis, is Ultimaker going to stock product here in the states where we can get upgrades and accessories easily?

Rusty, there has been only one meeting. Last November. We skipped December due to the holidays. The idea was just to get together and talk ONLY 3d printing and possibly digital fabrication. But mostly 3d printing. I'd say yes, a new place is needed. Probably makes sense to move around.

Parts have been available for some time at a company called Fbrc8 in Memphis. Utimaker has a list of resellers. They no longer sell direct. I'm not sure if parts will be available at other websites. Aside from knockoffs, that is. :)

I'll certainly share anything I get access to!

I don't know if anyone would be interested but I am sure I could setup a meeting here at Burns & McDonnell on Ward Parkway sometime.

I also have a question. I am working with an original Ultimaker with the dual extruder option. Has anyone here used this? I am thinking of just making it a single filament printer but using the dual extruders as switching between ABS and PLA. Anyone here done that? How well did it work?

I am also wondering about the best filament now days. Since I have been out of the hobby a couple years now, just wondering your opinion on the best ABS to use?

Maybe this? Does anyone use this brand? Specifically looking for silver and these guys can provide it.

I had this setup at Science City but never really used them. I believe Paul Piong does this and just changed the sliced gcode manually. Switching t0 to t1 for Cura produced code. Simplify3d has a way to do it by choosing which extruded to use. Hal's UMO is dual, we can try his. :)

What do want to print, lots of ABS alternatives now. That is a well respected company but I've not used that brand of filament, only Ultimaker, printbl (PLA - Always sold out), and colorfabb (PLA - http://printedsolid.com/) also Maker Geeks and Taulman Nylons (many vendors)

I have always preferred ABS, even back on my old Prusa. Just not as brittle as PLA and stronger in my opinion. Yeah I had checked out FBRC8 before I posted and they only have 3 colors of ABS. Maybe I will go with black and not try to find silver or gray.  Or maybe just order one roll from the link I had originally and try that.

yeah it would be cool if anyone with the dual extractor can chime in with their experience and or shortcuts, or even if it doesn't work well let me know.

Thanks

It's the same behavior in every dual system, the unused nozzle can hit your print. Software has some good tricks now for avoiding one color from contaminating the other. Prime pillars and wiper objects. The rest is the same, correct temp for that material etc... I'd love to test it again. Hal and I both did the calibration routine in Cura and then never really used it for something other then playing around.

I like IC3D ... and you can order it through Smile.amazon.com and (hopefully you will) choose to have Amazon donate to Cowtown Computer Congress (does not cost you even a cent more) ... I have a discount code for the filament I can share with this group....

I have used the filament on both the Ultimaker 2 and the Oni ... have

IC3D at amazon

Discount code for 10% off:  IC3DUC81

I believe that is only for filament. Nice thing is...if you have Amazon Prime ... you get it a lot quicker and free shipping.  :-)  I have had better luck with it than MakerGeeks ... been kind of disappointed in their filament ... going to print with some other for a bit and then try MakerGeeks again (only reason is IC3D is limited in color range).

If you have any problem with the code let me know and I can contact them. It was specifically given to CCCKC and their members and students...so I am the point of contact.

Ahhh makes sense. I have found a couple of large Delta's that look interesting.

Hey I am sure there is more than one of you on here that is using Simplify3D. Has anyone here had any trouble either exporting .stl files or saving their factory or settings files? I can go in and make changes to my files and do a save as in the case of the factory files, or export the .stl and in the case of the factory file, it writes a file but it is though the changes were never made. I can exit and bring that file back in and the changes were not saved.  I have checked permissions, I am also running in Admin mode. I am about to ask for a refund as my time limit is about up. It looks like a great program and I think it does everything I need except save changes. I am using windows 10 in 64 bit version.

hahaah I doubt that Bryan. I will look at the assembly instructions but I really don't see how else it could have been done. I looked at the Wiki and I believe you did everyting right but I think maybe that back may be on just a little tight or something?  It's just barely scraping just enough to irritate me with the clicking as it goes up and down the grain. So really not much. I just can't figure out why they have that tab with a hole in it sticking out that way.

This is the bed normally on an UM2. When that bed is on an Ultimaker 2 it has a screw that points down and hits the Z homing switch. Just file it down or something. Can't think of anywhere to adjust it otherwise. Maybe the laser cutting was off for the guide rod holes?

I imagine the laser holes for the large rods are off just a hair. It doesn't scrape much. I will just sand the tab or the back and make a little clearance.

Thanks guys.

I finally did hear back from Simplify3d. They had me reset the program back to factory settings and it didn't help with the save issue. I thin uninstalled and re-installed with no luck there either. Luckly I found a thread on Ultimaker about the manual control so I will probably end back up with Cura or Repetier. They address the dual extruders so they should work. Also I did get the second extruder setup in Simplfy3d but since I can't save the settings, it does me no good.

Can you attach a handful of screenshots showing exactly what buttons you're pressing?  You need to "Update profile" before you export anything in S3D otherwise the changes are lost.  "Update profile" is right next to the profile dropdown in the FFF settings dialog.

Rusty C

unread,
Feb 4, 2016, 3:39:08 PM2/4/16

One thing is to backup settings because I have to modify the printer settings to accommodate the second extruder and set one up as ABS, the other PLA. That way I don't have to screw with the clogging issues of dissimilar materials. The other is to save the model once scaled and such. Also if I am not mistaken simplify3d can look for errors in the model and correct those, so saving would be a must afterwards.

I am sure I am just doing something stupid. Nothing new there. &#X1f60a

Okay I think I got Simplify3d working as far as saving settings and saving .stl files so I will keep it.

If it's not one thing it's another though. I have a lot of wonderful Ultimaker PLA that Bryan gave me but evidently sitting for a year was not good on it even though he had it packaged up with ziplock bags and silica Jel packets in them. The PLA is very brittle now and won't relax enough to get from the spool to the extruder drive without snapping. Anyone have any tricks up their sleeves on that one?

Bake it at the lowest temp your oven will go, with the door cracked open, for like 3 hours.  You'll deform the plastic somewhat but it'll give it some flex back.

Okay I got the thing to print better by in reasing the heat to 225 on PLA at least it isn't dying now but I can't get the fill to meet the walls. I have tried numerous settings in Simplify3d. I then ran across an article that says the Ultimaker is constantly needing the belts tensioned so they suggested belt tensioners. Is this correct and which ones seem to work best for you?

The best one I found was adding another nut to the screw that is INSIDE the wooden belt clamping block. There are some printed ones and another uses a spring from a clothspin but they always hit something and I hated the look of it.

Go to 230! That is one fat ass bead, what is the nozzle size? Possibly check the tension on the feeder on the back or maybe measure and adjust the filament diameter in S3D? Just guessing on those last two. I only used CURA on the originals.

I'll have to lookup those hacks, I've been in UM2/2+ land for a while, but we did these on the two Originals at Science City. Next week it is!

It's all stock UM1 hardware, including the hotend and 0.4mm nozzle.  I always had problems with it under-extruding (and did warn Rusty of that who apparently has forgotten that warning).

I never figured out why.  I imagine it's a simple hardware change or setting.  It's not steps/mm.

Yeah I forgot evidently but that's nothing surprising considering it's been a while since I bought it. It's all good Bryan, either I figure it out or use it for parts.

Now that I am reminded of the under extrusion problem, Luis, what do you think of trying this out? Bryan is right, the extruder feed seems to be doing ok, or at least when I manually extrude 10 mm on Simplify, it measures 10 mm. I don't see the filament getting hung up or anything but look at this aftermarket head setup.

Or maybe even a new UM2 clone? Is the UM2 rod spacing the same as the UM original? I believe they are both 6mm.

Wasn't it a dual extrusion?

Just let Luis look at it before you start buying stuff.  There might be a potato chip lodged somewhere.

hahahah Yeah it is a dual. I can get a dual UM2 head too. I might tear the nozzle a part tonight and take a look. I doubt any potato chips though. &#X1f60a

Okay, I think  I got most if not all of the under extrusion solved. I believe it was a bad stepper. All I did was to switch extruder feeds and things are much more solid. Now I just have to get it to stick better to the build plate.

Luis, I still would like to meet up sometime just for some fine tuning tips and also the Simplify3D is still not behaving as I would think but it could be just too many settings I am not used to yet.
