Regional Ideation Sessions?

Here's my half-baked idea in light of the dissolution of CCCC:

What if some of us hosted Regional Ideation Sessions (as many as possible so that people could drive) where we did design thinking things and small groups:

1) tried to map the field as we understand it (there will be many; the goal would not be unity but to surface people's grounded views)

2) try to name what we do (again, there will be many answers)

3) try to consider the biggest challenges around literacy and writing right now

Then in light of the varied answers we come up with, make proposals.

Each region's answers and proposals could be collected somehwere (I'm guessing WAC Clearinghouse Mike Palmquist Chris Basgier) and then we could collectively see what we have proposed across the country from the ground up to then imagine next steps.

Local WPAs and journal editors could help host and recruit some graduate students to serve as notetakers and facilitators

I'm a big fan of bottom up sensemaking for deep change, and this feels like a moment for that. Seth Kahn just noted people's anxieties about other people making decisions for them. I share it. Which is why I think going back to some of the values the led to the creation of our field in the firs place--like valuing local context and varied voices--would be a good way to approach this. If I had to guess, we might come out with one more than one identified discipline or field, and maybe that's ok. But we won't know unless we have these conversations.

Rena Perez just wrote the best dissertation about how to engage in this kind of sensemaking method. I recommend reading it and looking at her heuristic.

Brilliant.

.02. Virtual meetings would keep everyone's box the same size. Probably a good thing. Far more accessible, especially for international colleagues who consider themselves a part of  the C's. Also, more ecological friendly. A good and widely shared value. 

Great goals!!! I love it. So clear. So necessary. And, with a cleaf follow up. The submission of proposals. May the better angels guide the way.

Thank you for sharing Wardle's post, Traci. I've heard many great ideas of where CCCC should go from here, but it admittedly makes me anxious thinking proposals will be formed and decisions made before we can collectively think through what we want. I appreciate the idea of a slower (and therefore, more accessible for me and likely others) and deliberate coming together from the ground up.

I like this idea a lot of there being an interim period to stabilize, followed by a longer design process for a durable and aligned future organization. In the short term,  the perfect is the enemy of the good it seems.
