SEVERAL CHURCH LEADERS WILL VISIT HAITI THIS WEEKEND TO SHOW SUPPORT FOR REBUILDING EFFORTS
Global Ministries has organized a visit for the General Minister and President and her United Church of Christ counterpart as well as the Co-Executives of Global Ministries to spend two days in Haiti to witness the recovery efforts and meet our partners. The leadership delegation will walk the streets of Port-au-Prince this weekend, listening and praying with church partners as part of a visit to show solidarity with the people of that country. They also will attend a memorial service for those who died during the earthquake including those studying in the headquarters offices of CONASPEH, a grass-roots network of churches that provides a variety of services in Haiti. CONASPEH has been a Global Ministries partner for 20 years.
"We want our partners there to experience our human presence as one way of letting them know they are not alone," said David Vargas, Co-Executive of Global Ministries. To read their story, go to: www.disciples.org/tabid/58/itemid/570/Global-Ministries-Haiti-Trip.aspx

CHRISTIAN THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY TO APPOINT A COMMITTEE FOR NEW PRESIDENT SEARCH
Christian Theological Seminary is accelerating its process to find a replacement for current president Edward L. Wheeler, who retires in June of 2012. The CTS Board of Trustees has appointed a transition committee that will work with CTS faculty to determine the qualities needed and desired in a new president. It is hoped that a new president will begin service in July 2011. Wheeler, whose three terms makes him the longest serving president in the institution's history, will become president emeritus of CTS beginning July 1, 2011.
"The plan also allows me the opportunity to be of service to the new president without worrying about when to take my earned sabbatical and how that will affect the day to day operations of the seminary," remarked Wheeler in a meeting with CTS faculty, students and staff on March 15. WEEK OF COMPASSION GIVES EXPRESSION TO OUR CORE VALUE AS DISCIPLES
"The world experiences two visible expressions of our faith as Disciples - compassion and unity - each time we walk in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in need," says Laura Evans Mahn, the Council on Christian Unity's representative to the Week of Compassion Committee.
Her witness affirms, "People around the world are filled with hope because the Week of Compassion works day in and day out in partnership with Christians and churches around the world: responding to disasters, rebuilding communities, offering food and medicine as concrete expressions of care. And as we celebrate the gift of hope, we celebrate our commitment to unity that makes so much of this hope possible."

CHURCH ORGANIST FREDA NORRIS, 95, LOOKS FORWARD TO PLAYING AGAIN
Freda Norris can't really play the organ for her Disciples congregation any more but it hasn't stopped her from trying. Norris, 95, has been turning out musical notes from either the piano or organ at Orestes Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Orestes, Ind., for the past 85 years. Although a recent flare-up of arthritis has kept her from playing the organ, Norris continues to attend the church where she has been going since she was a toddler.
"I think she is a fantastic lady," said Courtley V. Granger, pastor of Orestes Christian Church. "She does a good job. She's getting old and she's retiring but she's still looking forward to playing again." The congregation had an appreciation day for Norris earlier this month. CHURCHES UNITING IN CHRIST FORGES AHEAD; TARGETS RACISM
Representatives from member communions of Churches Uniting in Christ (CUIC) left a Feb. 17 meeting in Baltimore, Md. with hope and a recommitment to CUIC's original vision in giving expression to the visible unity of the church, particularly regarding battling racism within the church. Their resolve follows a key decision reached to recommend a proposal calling for re-affirmation of CUIC's "eight marks of commitment" as the basis for its relationships among members, and to identify "overcoming racism" as the core commitment for CUIC's future life and programming.
"My hope is that the CUIC member churches will truly reclaim their original vision for this relationship in giving expression to the visible unity of the church, especially as together they address the issues of racial justice within the church and in our society," said President of the Council on Christian Unity Robert K. Welsh. For more, go to: snurl.com/v21j9
