Hi all,

I am a student working with the Climate Code Foundation as a part of the Google Summer of Code 2012. I am a PhD student in computer science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which I should complete next year. Over the summer, I'll be developing a really cool web-based visualization tool for ccc-gistemp. I plan for this project to include a server-side component processing and producing intermediate and final results of ccc-gistemp. However, the neat part will be the (HTML5, Javascript, etc) client side -- a map-based visualization of the temperature and normalization data as it is distributed spatially. The tool will also support selection and visualization of particular time series and illustrate how the climate has changed through time and space. I'll continue to post updates with my progress and, hopefully, solicit some comments, advice, and -- a fortunate side-effect -- browser compatibility testing.

Ditto. Where will you be managing source? e.g., github?

TIA, Tom Roche <Tom_...@pobox.com>

Hi Tom,

I plan to manage the source on Google code:

Hi All,

I have just posted the first development release (0.1.0). I would love
to get some feedback - please keep in mind this is a work in progress.
The release can be downloaded here:
http://ccf-mapview.googlecode.com/files/ccf-mapview-0.1.0.tar.gz.
Throw it in almost any web server (one is included) and try it out
using your favorite browser. Chrome probably works best, earlier
version of IE are discouraged.

With two usable weeks left before the end of the Google Summer of
Code, I've made another development release, 0.2.0
(http://ccf-mapview.googlecode.com/files/ccf-mapview-0.2.0.tar.gz).
Since the first release, we have added markers indicating each
contributing weather station and charts showing the historical
temperature at each station in addition to many user interface
changes/improvements. In this final stretch, I'd like to catch any
serious browser/system incompatibility, so if you have a chance to try
it out, please let me know if you run into any issues.

The Google Summer of Code is officially ending this coming Monday, so I've posted a release 0.3.0 (http://ccf-mapview.googlecode.com/files/ccf-mapview-0.3.0.tar.gz). This last release for GSoC comes with annotation and historical charts for the GISTEMP sub-boxes, among other things. I polished up the build and installation procedure and made some performance improvements, including compression of the various data files for transit.
