Problems with session timeout

I'm noticing problems with sessions timing out prematurely. Both in
1.8.5. and 1.9
Anyone else been having similar problems?
If you have, could you fix it or solve it in some way?
I'm also seeing a problem with cookies, when you log out, it's not
invalidating both session cookies.
