Hi everyone!

Welcome to the second facilitated run-through of Creative Commons for K12 Educators! The current version of the course is here: https://p2pu.org/en/courses/620/

For this first week, please complete the following:
  1. Review About, Communicating in this Course, Badges, and join the CC4K12 Google Group if you haven't yet to connect with your colleagues.
  2. Introduce yourself by responding to this email with your name, profession/field, and timezone (click 'reply all'). If you're already a part of the Google Group, everyone will see your response; if you aren't, then I will see your response. I will be using these responses to help you sort into small groups. 36 people are signed up for the course, so I'm imagining 7 groups of 5. Once everyone has responded, I will email you all in small groups separately so you can connect with each other to hold your first discussion for Week 1.
  3. Complete Week 1 of the course!
  4. Do you have a blog? Share the link to posts containing your assignments in the Disqus forum that week. If you don't have a blog, create a Wordpress.com user account and share your account name with me so I can invite you to contribute to https://cc4k12.wordpress.com/ for your assignments.
  5. Optional: Please participate in this international research project by filling out this short survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/K12_Educators. We are examining the impact of the School of Open courses in order to improve our courses for the future!
I think that is it for now. I will start by introducing myself: My name is Jane and I will be facilitating this course for the next 7 weeks. I work for Creative Commons as a Project Manager in Education, but have also been a volunteer course organizer/facilitator with P2PU since 2009. I guess my field is open education/culture. I live in Los Angeles so am operating on US pacific time.

What you can expect from me: Timely responses to questions via email, the Google Group, Disqus forum embedded at the course (see Communicating in this course for more on that), feedback on your blog posts/assignments. I am also happy to help you coordinate small group meetings, suggest tools you might use, etc. Please don't hesitate to reach out!

Looking forward to the next few weeks!

Best,
Jane

Hi, Jane and fellow travelers,

My name is Chris and I am looking forward to participating in Creative Commons for K-12 Educators (2).
I live in Cambridge, New Zealand, and am operating on NZST (UTC +12).
I am a sole-charge Digital Technology teacher at a small rural high school in the South Waikato. I have a passion for computer science, robotics and web-tech, and recently 'making' and electronics. My background was in Advertising and Design, in both NZ and the UK.
In my spare time I volunteer as a parent committee member with Hamilton Junior Naturalist club and am a trustee of Te Kauri Waikuku Trust (an environmental education trust).
My twitter handle is onemouse, and I have revived a blog at Shot Across the Bows

Hi everyone

My name is Clare Forrest and I'm the Library Manager at Raroa Intermediate in Wellington, New Zealand. For those not in NZ, Intermediates are schools for 11-13 year olds. We have our students for 2 years before they go to high school and we have lots of fun. I am in the New Zealand Standard Time Zone which means we get to do everything 19 hours ahead of those of you in LA.

I love being a school librarian and love learning new skills, especially if they relate to digital technology, so am looking forward to this course. Our students are increasingly using 21st Century online technologies and I want to be able to help them become good digital citizens.

My twitter handle is ForrestC8 and I've started a new blog at http://clareraroa.wordpress.com/ because I need to keep it separate from my school blog/website.

See you in a group soon.

Cheers
Clare

Hello guys!

My name is Jake, I am a Computer Education teacher of the high school department of a certain private school here in Philippines (UTC+8). I have some experience in the field of Graphics and Design (Photoshop, CorelDraw, Indesign), Computer Hardware Servicing, and a little knowledge about software.

We just started the K-12 education program last year. This year we have Grade 7 and Grade 8 in our secondary education. We don't have enough K- 12 Learning Modules for the major subjects as well as in computer education. I am very interested in learning more about Creative Commons because I have a little knowledge about it.I believe that this will greatly help me and my students in learning about different types of software found on the internet and specially about Creative Commons. Now that we are adapting K-12 Education here in Philippines, this will help me a lot in teaching students what is Creative Commons.

Guys, I can't promise to participate all our activities, for the reason that I have a limited internet connection here in my place. But I will try to follow our schedule of activities here.

I don't have a blog yet, but will try to register in wordpress.com. I don't have any idea on what should I put in my blog yet.

Thank you so much for the opportunity of learning with you guys. By the way, I have my new Gmail account - jacobyte...@gmail.com

Best Regards,

Jake

Welcome all!

@Clare and @Chris - sounds like you guys are in the same timezone -- I might group you two! Also, if you'd like the ability to cross-post to http://cc4k12.wordpress.com/ - just let me know your WP usernames and I'll invite you as contributors.

@Jake - No worries regarding internet connection -- you are certainly welcome to take this course at your own pace. Glad you are joining us asynchronously. :)

@Moussa - I'd be interested to hear more about the differences in teaching Physics and what you're doing now, and how OER might play a role in both.

We have such a global group here already-- NZ, Philippines, Senegal! Excited to make new connections.

Best,
Jane

Hello Jane,
There is not much difference between teaching physics and my current job because I'm still in the teaching profession.
I was teaching physics to students (age between 15 and 20 years).
Now I help teachers to produce resources for students. I also help to improve the quality of their learning using ICT.
It is for this reason that this course interests me because it allows me to discover new OER that I can share with my colleagues in Senegal. I also will uncover new approaches that will allow us to enhance our teaching.
Best regards
Moussa Diop

My name is Malena and I work as a graphic designer in ARTIMAGOS with a colleague illustrator. We mostly collaborate with Textbooks Publishing Companies. I am recently MA on information and digital technologies. During this master my interest in education, media/ digital literacies and free culture, specially for teenagers, has increased: I would like so much to be part of their learning process.
There are some thoughts and articles about that in one of my blogs, in Spanish so far (English from now on).
I live in Spain, and in the first weeks of the course it will be difficult for me to follow as much as I would like due to a messy Internet connection..

For those who have not yet introduced themselves (or joined the google group), please try to do so by tomorrow so that I can organize you into a small group for next week (unless you'd rather take the course on your own).

Good weekend, and don't forget that your first tasks are due by the end of Sunday!

Cheers,
Jane
