Friends, following are the notes from today's meeting.
We're planning to meet again next Sunday, same time.
Join us in drafting the next agenda:  http://etherpad.openstewardship.net/PMS-agenda

Agenda & Notes from today's Skype meeting on CC-PMS/ProM convened Feb 20, 2.00pm US EST
< This and prior agenda / notes are available at  http://cotw.cc/wiki/CC_PMS_Meeting_Record >

Facilitator: Tim Rayner

Attending:  Suresh, Tim, MM, Pamela,  Tiberius, Charley Q., Gerry G.,  Fabio B.,  Ben B., Randy F., Paul H.

One of the objectives for Feb 20. meeting:  Establish scope/mandate of each of the three tracks: <Tech>, <Data>, <Outreach>  and how they will work together...Are these tracks clear?  Is there another track missing/needed?

Minutes

1. Welcome & Intro of new Faces
2. MetaData Strategy - Suresh
Multi pronged approach
        1. Work with existing projects that are a part of the ProM ecosystem (us!) since we are already collaborating to some extent and collect data based on first approximation.. underway. We all need to help with this.  Review this pad before jumping into the spreadsheet:  http://etherpad.openstewardship.net/MetaData   Here's the link for the spreadsheet:  http://cotw.me/cc   (need to be invited, or member of cc-pms group)
        2. Review existing meta-data structures... StratML etc.. MM already starting on this
3, Review existing dating sites to try to determine unique features that are working... need to see who can help with this.   (As well as what data may be available)
        4. If you see another viable approach, mock it up, and offer it for consideration!

The way ahead: what data are we collecting and what do we plan to do with it?

  • Gathering info on other matching algorithms; OKCupid, Plentyoffish etc

Randy: Granularity of questions/needs -- at what stage?   (e.g. physical space for meetings -- rather different from conceptual questions in Suresh's spreadsheet)

3. Outreach Strategy - Tim

Tim suggests:  we should focus on Transition Groups along with Climate Change ... (not just the latter) CharleyQ concurrs.

Tiberius - has contact with local group that wants to set up Transition process

Tiberius: Sees the value of ProM as matching projects that are working on different problems where working together results in synergy

Tiberius feels like ProM not as useful in context that is homogeneous (e.g, Transition)
MM: Well ... it depends on how granular we look at collaboration -- even among like minds collaboration takes a lot of work.
Tim: maybe we need to expand the scope to generate synergy

MM: There is room for matchings based on similarity, and matches based on complementarity.  (both)

Pam:  I want to bring in my friends from Nigeria and Kenya  - already having to respond to challenges of climate change - different rains - exploring irrigation ideas - think it would be helpful to bring the practicalities into a wider forum
  • MM: Do it. - Pam:  but in what way? there is nothing here yet for them to connect with
  • MM: Perhaps they can articular their visions of useful collaboration?  (without needing to get stuck on any format for User Stories.)

Randy: A lot depends on who you are talking to within an agency (in terms of potential for collab, or even identity/vision) Higher up you go, the clearer the linkages between groups becomes

Paul: we need to be able to make it clear why it is attractive for organizations to participate even now at this very early stages
  • MM: how can participation at each stage be a benefit/positive activity for users.

Ben: start with groups where there might already be some affinity. See Netention-IntentMap below

There is a distinction between Project Mapping and Project Matching. Sees matching as an emergent phenomena

MM: Glad we are invoking the distinction of Project mapping and Project matching.important

Fabio: question. In regular dating there is a clear need that is addressed that are not solved by Dreamfish, WiserEarth, etc.
What is the feeling about, and what is the status of, working with wiser earth?

Gerry: How are we different? We are not creating a single solution... we are creating a network of solutions

Fabio: can we assume that projects will want to work together?
What is the workflow? If projects want to work together what is the process
Paul: perhaps we can draw on the power of open stewardship & interoperability as robust attractors that wiserearth & others haven't yet fully developed?  --exactly-cq, concur!
I hope we are creating a network of the 'questions" as much as a network of  the "solutions" - a network of the people who are addressing things locally and want to reach out beyond that for greater effectivelness.

Randy: we are trying to bite off a lot ... let's balance that with adoption -- people adopt inferior tech that makes them productive   Let's note that we need to think about usability

Readiness - willingness -- openess --- connectedness ---- ...

yes - we "do it the hard way" because " we don't know the easy way"
Tim had a good intuition, organizations in need are going for collaboration, those that have access to resources usually go alone, are focused on their own goals
Did you consider using a database and GIS, as I suggested by email at 11?
To Mark:  yes, we will certainly be utilizing GIS.

Tim - Facebook took off because it is very simple, take the dating metaphor seriously, with adaptations to the different context (how the metaphor must be adapted).
Simple on the surface, more complex inside.
Simple principle... VISIBILITY into EXISTING RELATIONSHIPS
yes - maybe we do something that "works" for us connecting with each other - and then when that works we bring some of our friends in - and then we gradually make it better to include more of our friends..
There is another benefit to eating our own dog food now: we get early, prominent placement for our key principles and projects
yes and then those attract others - because we show benefit - and then others want to join in
Tim - wants to convene outreach group over the coming week

Randy: the "tracks" should have skype calls/meetings (using etherpad in adjunct)
Another reason for eating our own dogfood is that we cause categories to be there that attract the people we want to attract.
Taking that further, as the database of orgs gets bigger, the 8 points of categorical distinctions get progressively more relevant as filtering mechanisms. They are also relevant for building participation from specific selections within category types.

Outreach - universality - Wikimania - http://wikimania.org and http://meta.wikimedia.org have made much progress in crossing language barriers, especially. --cq

4.  User Stories  <MM brief mention of the value of this task & it being a space beyond the separate Tracks, involving everyone!>>

USER STORIES WILL BE COLLECTED HERE:   http://etherpad.openstewardship.net/CC-PMS-UserStories   Creating, Collecting, Sorting, establishing relative complexity & priority of the User Stories is for the whole team, i.e. it's not limited to the TechPlatform Track.
fabio: User stories are the answer to my question re:needs
MM: It is essential that we construct User Stories in order to understand what problem we are solving and what the benefit of ProM is

MM: develop a number of different user stories that cover different sorts of relationships

Homework... generate user story

MM: imagine a story of Internet/Swarm supported collaboration - write it down.  Perhaps solicit stories with this sort of question when reaching out?
paul: great suggestion
Randy: we should start talking immediately with those that we want to engage. Outreach should start now.

for myself - on the stories - as I write strories to this group I will also copy them to people in my wider network and explain to them why I am writing the stories.
  • great!

MM: let's solicit user stories by asking creative/useful stories?

I am reminded of what happened in Kenya in the post election violence - and how support emerged online to help - how do we so a similar thing to help with the climate change challenge - it is being faced by people who already have experience of working together online and getting a good outcome

Randy: we don't need compelling reason to sign up today, but we need compelling reason not to go anywhere
  • concur!  Keep an inviting space.  central to Open Stewardship.

Mark: Let's systematize this process, if people agree with the idea. Where should that happen?

Background reading on user stories from Agile perspective:

5. Name and Branding
  •   Maybe we can identify or develop a process to figure this out
  •  -- is there a better word than Branding? Service mark? "Intellectual property" is weird. "branding" opens a "spammish" connotation.  (agree)

ProM as provisional/internal name -- agreed?     I think prom or PROM is okay - but changing between upper and lower case is a drag.
Tim - ProM is North American

Charley - we should consider a more multi-cultural name. Need generic terms and roles to cross-cultures and languages

Tim: Marius Bauer from Gaian project which crowdsources digital design contributions representing beauty of nature willing to set up challenge relating to ProM. Have 5500 artists that have contributed to the project.   Is Gaian project listed in Suresh's spreadsheet? no, but should be! -cool-cq... is there now!

Tim talking to 350.org. Paul suggests talking to 350 about expanding the purview of their Great Power Race to include Arts and Humanities students. Plus bring this expanded project together with the Gaian project.

Importance of collaboration that breaks us away from over-reliance on words - benefit of pictures

6. Tools Training/Use

We use:
  • google-docs   e.g. Suresh' spreadsheet:  http://cotw.me/cc   (need to be invited, or member of cc-pms group)

Who needs help, with what tool?
Who can help orient others on the team to the tools we use?
fabio: Happy to help with IRC, etherpad, wiki, bettermeans
Mark R: I need help with bettermeans and the wiki.  I may also need help with google-docs.
Paul: needs help w/ bm & all tools in fact!
Pam - only really comfortable with  skype and google stuff  - now a bit happier with etherpad - but not sure of the "dynamics"
Suresh: Need help with cotw wiki and BM to some extent & can help with the rest
CharleyQ very comfy using MediaWiki but getting used to etherpad and BetterMeans.

7. BetterMeans
  • TIm asks:  Can we use BM just to track tasks for now?

Pamela asks: For team-members with limited time  -- what are we supposed to be doing?
  • MM:   for now, plenty to be accomplished in drafting user stories or filling out projects on Suresh's spreadsheet.

Randy: what is the License of the content that we put into BM?  (Suresh or someone wil check)
-cq is uncomfy with BM so far-fwiw-

8. Movement Camp?  <<MM can speak on this - at this stage, it's mainly an offer/option>
  • Would a MC be of use to the CC-PMS Project?  At what stage?   When?  How do we want it handled or different?   (Perhaps shorter, perhaps in series)
  • If we decide to go this route, I would suggest making a commitment to do it regularly... say monthly or bi-monthly... whatever makes sense.

Charley:  would like to conene a Recent Changes Camp ... or other face-to-face event in KY.  Might wanna look at Wikimedia Austrailia and upcoming Wikimania... several ideas..

Paul: if next movement camp's on a Sunday (in california) please give me as much advance notice as possible so i can clear my schedule

9. Sign on to one or more of the work tracks!  (on the pad of the relevant track!)  MM

Find the three track and their pads here:  http://cotw.cc/wiki/Project_Matching

Discussion of the Theoretical Framework?  http://etherpad.openstewardship.net/cc-pms  Perhaps this is strengthened by the UserStory generation/collection effort.

Thanks Michael,

Since I'm not sure where best to share the following, I'm putting it here & on http://etherpad.openstewardship.net/PMS-outreach-plan & via another email =  nano wrinkle 32 hours ago

Yesterday, our use of the term "captive audience" (which Tim nixxed, thankfully : ) and a phrase about 'holding people's attention so they don't go away' popped up toward the end of our skype conversation; both suggest to me that all of us can help one another break free from some popular yet still old-paradigm-baggage so we can collectively run this marathon more smoothly.

I acknowledge these are common ways of viewing whomever's being so-called "served" AND I feel strongly confident that all of us here are earnestly seeking ways of actually serving real, live human beings. Though not entirely uncommon, our aims are sufficiently different from a lot of what is common.

Thinking in terms of capturing & holding people's attention is qualitatively different than thinking in terms of attracting & nurturing real, live human resourcefulness. The latter kind of thinking strikes me

as much more enabling for all of us to seek, discover and flow along viable paths of least resistance; which is great news for marathon runners.

Since folks are smart and thus tend to figure out pretty fast whether they/we are being treated as commodities or as human beings, I'm confident we'll make a lot more progress by articulating our emergent work together in ways that are more naturally attractive; especially with respect for our primary stakeholders = the very folks we're aiming to serve.

Please pardon the absence of sufficient spontaneity on my part. It's simply taken me most of the past 24 hours to reflect on these impressions and then write them down in a hopefully helpful way. I feel honored and refreshed to have been welcomed to participate with y'all in yesterday's skype powwow.

Sincerely,

paul
