Below you will find the message that Rachel sent to the vice principals at Kelly Miller Attached you all will also find the fingerprint instructions that DCPS requires for volunteers. According to my colleague, it takes about 1 week or so for the application to process so whoever plans on volunteering should probably get that done as soon as possible.

Please let me know if you have any further questions, and I will keep you all posted on the response I receive from Kelly Miller.

Good Afternoon!

I hope that this message finds you well. My name is Chasity Cooper and I am a volunteer member of  Capital Cause, a non-profit organization that enables young philanthropists to maximize their financial and skills-based contributions through collective giving. My particular working group (Food A.S.A.P.) was charged with reducing food deserts in Ward 7, with the result of 500 residents gaining access to healthy food options. In attempt to begin achieving this goal, we have teamed up with DC Central Kitchen and their annual event “Strawberries and Field Greens” that will take place on May 29th, 2013. On this day, all DC public schools will have farm fresh strawberries and salad greens in their school lunches.

With that said, we would like to request permission to host an activity table during the lunch periods of all Kelly Miller students that would include food demonstrations and sharing information with students about promote an interest in incorporating fresh produce in one’s diet and promote healthy eating. Capital Cause could provide the volunteers to staff the table and any necessary props, posters, and talking points.

Does this sound like an initiative that Kelly Miller would be interested in participating in? I am more than happy to provide you with more information about the event as well as Capital Cause upon your request.

Thanks so much, and I look forward to your timely response.

Hi everyone!

This document also asks for people to have their TB test results......yikes!  On the web page, it says "other weekend or one-day service events are not required to complete the clearance process."  Hopefully that will be the case too!

Jen, did you say that your DC Central Kitchen folks normally did or didn't also get through the clearance process? I can't remember....

Honestly, I don' t think that we will have to go through this entire process because we will only be in the school for a few hours. But I will keep you posted once I receive a response.

Hi Jean,

My contact at DC Central Kitchen didn’t mention the clearance process for volunteers.  I can ask her in any case.  My contact at the Office of the State Superintendent of Education did mention the clearance process.  She said when we talk to the Principal of Kelly Miller to check on their specific requirements.  She also saw the one day service event clause in the volunteer policy and thought we might fall under that.

Good Afternoon Mr. Hobbs:

Thank you so much for your response! Last year, events at other schools included volunteers that spoke about the importance of healthy eating, educational displays, as well as a visit from the Truck Farm where students had the opportunity to touch, smell and taste some of the herbs and veggies growing inside.

This year, Team Food A.S.A.P. (in collaboration with DC Central Kitchen ans OSSE) is looking to potentially do food demonstrations that include strawberries, salad greens and other healthy foods. Additionally, our volunteers will interact with students and speak to them about different healthy options using these ingredients.

I'm actually meeting with my group members right now, so once we finalize our next steps, I'd be more than happy to give you a call on Tuesday to speak with you further about this initiative. Our deadline for this project is May 31st, so we would like to move as expeditiously as possible in order to confirm this event.

Thank you so much for your consideration in advance!

Chasity

Good afternoon Chastity,

This sounds like a great idea.  Can you give me some more information on how students will interact with the "activity table"?

Thank you so much for that introduction Ms. Rachel!

And good afternoon  Mr. Hobbs, Mr. Vereen and Ms. Topps,

I hope that this message finds you all well. Per the message that Ms. Rachel sent you on Wednesday, I am just following up with you all to get your thoughts  on how my group can move forward on this initiative. I understand that this is a very hectic time of year, and we want to make sure that we are not interfering with any events that are currently in place. However, we would really like to connect with Kelly Miller students  in order to educate and empower them to make healthy food choices.

At your earliest convenience, please let me know if the Capital Cause team "Food A.S.A.P." will be able to host an activity table on May 29th in honor of "Strawberries and Field Greens" Day.

Thank you so much for you consideration in advance, and I look forward to hearing from you soon!
