FROM THE PARENT:
Dear Mrs. XXX,
In a previous conversation we had I made myself clear that
we do not practice Catholicism (no holi/holy-days). Today I was made aware that
[Son’s name] partook in an mask wearing ritual in the cafeteria. This obviously
had to do with the celebration of Mardi Gras, an Catholic holiday. Mardi Gras
is an pagan celebration. It is NOT Christian. This celebration takes place just
before the Catholic holiday called Lent, where the practitioners deny
themselves certain "indulgences". I would appreciate it If this is
dealt with in a more appropriate manner in the future. [Son’s name] isn't aware
of Lent nor Mardi Gras. He is, after all, only a boy. The fact that I made it
clear to you in one of our meetings that we do not practice any form of
holidays should have been sufficient. If you would like some reading material
pertaining to this holy-day here's a good link:

TO THE PARENT:
Dear Parent,
I was not a part of this event, nor were any of the teachers. This was
done in the cafeteria which is run by a company called “Chartwells”. They are
an independent contractor that the school corporation has hired to do all food
service. They “celebrated” Mardi Gras without checking with any of us.
We were as surprised as you that this took place as it has never been
brought up before. I have forwarded your email to the lady who runs
Chartwells and I assume she will get back to you quickly. WE do not
celebrate holidays in our classroom without having any child whose family has
expressed concerns removed from the room.
Thank you,
FROM THE PARENT
I appreciate your prompt reply. I hope this will be a lesson learned on the
part of the school. Why an outside food service provider is so involved with
the students is incomprehensible to me. I think most of this has to do with the
fact that XXX has children who attend XXX. However, such an affiliation should
never compromise the belief systems of other students. We have laws in this
country which some simply ignore. My son has an legal right (first amendment)
to attend a public school without being included, ignorantly on his behalf, in
any pagan worship. However, this 'lunch lady' has decided to forgo all due
respect for any one's beliefs, and current school as well as government
policies. It is my conclusion that she should be reprimanded for said offense
so as to insure this type of behavior isn't continued. To show such a blatant
disregard for the rights and beliefs of others is, to me, intolerable. Once
again, thank you for your prompt reply.
