Some of my friends tell me to relax and have a cold one rather than pursuing tasks but I guess that is in my nature ;)

I am not having any real challenges with starting or power but as I have had the boat for 6 years now I began to contemplate refurbishing or replacing injectors as I heard the cost of replacement was about the same as refurbishment.

Today I received a quote for replacement...$ 695 canadian plus tax per injector, Original Yanmar parts, so 695 * 3 * 1.15 = $ 2,397.75 plus 1-3 hrs labor remove / replace.

All of a sudden my engine is sounding and looking better.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I read somewhere about aftermarket injector options but do not know much about those.

Hi Blair,

Mine have probably needed cleaning and or replacement since I got the boat 11 years ago.  I've been told at least one leaks when the engine is off and I get the overly rich mixture black smoke for a few seconds when I first start the engine after sitting for a week or so.

But, it starts quickly every time  / runs fine with enough power for 7.0+ knots motoring top speed in the right conditions / and I have other priorities.

It used to be hard to start on the first crank of the weekend when I originally got the boat. I fixed the problem by using Diesel Kleen additive religiously.  It not only helps keep the fuel system clean but also raises the cetane level which may explain why the engine went from being "A hard starter" to a few seconds of cranking when it's been sitting for over a week. Also, replacing the starter that the "experts" told me was fine (It wasn't) helped a bunch.

So, I leave it alone. Why? because the injectors are really hard to reach and may be stuck enough to cause damage if not removed by someone with real experience.  There is no such person I know of on the lake, so I leave it alone.  The initial smoke doesn't bother me.

The actual parts run around $100 per injector.  The rest is labor.  It is a job you could diy without specialized tools or knowledge but does require attention to detail.  Because that is what we did for Tinkertoy.  It made a big difference.

Hey Jim,
Where did you source the parts?  I've seen prices two or three times that.

Maybe key to this is which parts you order.  I use a local yanmar parts place called Great Lakes Diesel.
Here was my parts list

3 - 124770-53001
3 - 24341-000260 O-Ring
3 - 128275-11500 Cover
3 - 128275-11490 Insulator
6 - 124950-11450 Gasket
6 - 23414-080000 Cooper Washer
3 - 101147-59810 Banjo Bolt

That was just over $400… but was last year
