As promised, I'm posting pictures of my complete sprit / asym install details.

I was lucky enough for the sprit tube to fit directly under the furler basket assuming the mount was not on the metal plate as I needed the 1/8" of an inch clearance.  I'll probably do like Chuck and add the 2nd attachment pad eye to extend the sprit a bit further in light air.

As the current pad eye is configured, the sprit extends precisely 42.5 inches beyond the forward hoop to the max unsupported length as per the Eric's recommendation (And the Selden instructions) which is a bit short of the max phrf allowed length because of the fact that the hoop is behind the furler.  I think that it would not be unreasonable to extend a few inches for light air which account for most of my racing conditions in the summer.

Pictures in order of appearance

  • The sail flying: A2 Asymmetrical / Tri-Radial
    • ISP=48.67/14.83
    • J=14.83/4.52
    • BOWSPRIT=3.75/1143
    • STL (J PLUS BOWSPRIT)=18.58/5663
    • SAIL SKIN – FM44 44GSM 30 DENIER SPINNAKER NYLON
    • Same material as the Volvo Ocean race boats spins.
  • The completed install: The furling line is fair and (barely) clears, all functions as intended. The tube is 8 feet long and 4 inches diameter.
  • The fit under the furler basket

(More pictures in further replies size is limited)

That's the basic setup. We do the "inner" gybes and just starting to understand / practice the handling.  We racing with it tomorrow, it's supposed to be pretty windy... I guess we'll see what happens.

  • Underneath the hoop, using 2" SS fender washers as backing plates. Nice thing from C&C, there's an additional .5" layer as additional reinforcement in the bow peak area. You can see the edge of it near the nav light wire
  • Hoop mount snug in the corner
  • Hoop mount SS backing plate in the v-berth area. I still need to shorten the bolts, put caps on them, and will probably paint the whole thing white.
I decided to not use pop rivets to mount the sprit end and instead used 6mm SS screws with the holes tapped (Plenty of meat in the assembly for the threads to bite) and the heads

  • Until I install fair leads: The tack line runs through my forward genoa track block, then through the forward block of the intermediate genoa track, then after to the spin sheet cleat.  All that stuff works fine for now as I don't use those tracks for the time being, I use the aft track with my big genoa.
  • We use 2X 90 foot X 3/8" dia  Spectra Core /polyester cover "Avid Racer" lines from Cajun Trading for the sheets and an ex jib sheet for tack control.  The sheets have custom eye splices (Done by yours truly) and Dyneema soft shackles for easy attachment. I "whipped" the shackles into the sheet eye to keep them from flying off the boat (Has happened already, good thing they float) https://www.cajunrope.com/store/p12/Spectra_Core_Line_-_Free_Shipping.html

Hey Francois,
FWIW, I was able to raise the furler drum by repositioning the drum higher (maybe an inch) on it's internal turnbuckle.  Took some time to play with that.  I believe there is a two inch margin.  Couldn't get the correct lead for the furler line, so switched it over to starboard.

thought I would post my install photos here. I used an anchor roller up on the masthead to project the spinnaker halyard beyond the forestay. Facnor 2M bow Sprit. with bobstay attached. May get a longer tube to project out further but will leave as is for now. I use a Facnor continuous furling drum connected to a 2:1 tack line. Bought the extra top down conversion swivel so I can run either the asym (top down) or the code zero (bottom up) on the same drum.sprit.jpgroller.jpg

Nice setup. 1 question: Is the masthead anchor roller carbon or steel?

Your tube install is quite different from the Selden kit. My tube is 4 inches  in diameter / 8 feet long and is designed for up to 42.5 unsupported length.  It's not meant for a code zero which is fine for us as there's no use for one on my lake.  I would need a bob stay like you if I get a code zero when the boat makes its way to the ocean.  Attached is a picture from Wed nite racing if you haven't seen my FB post. The more we use it / learn how to handle it the more we love the sail.

Also, I forgot to mention that it's not really an A2, it's a cross between an A2 and A3 with  surprisingly wide angle / wind strength ranges that's custom designed for what we do.   It pulls between about 85-90 and 125-130 apparent wind angles. It's constructed from the same cloth as the Volvo Ocean racers spins and according to my sail maker will take: "Anything my crew is capable of throwing at it" wind speed.. LOL So far we've flown it in moderate and really light winds and it fills fine in 2-3 knots..  We're not quite up to strong winds skills yet with this. We'll see.

The anchor roller is stainless steel. Rather heavy item to put up there, but in my other attempts to setup the furlling asym system the projection was not enough.

I did look at the selden sprit pole but had the plan to use a code zero so opted for the facnor model. They only suggested a 1M unsupported projection for code zero use. I could get quite that as the mounting hardware i had to place behind the anchor locker hatch. If I get a slightly larger tube I could extend a little more to get 40” your using.
