Bow Sprit

Happy new year to you all.
I have started to make a removable bow sprit for the boat. It all started with me purchasing a top down furler. The shackle at the top kept catching on the head sail causing problems. I tried attaching it to the tip of the anchor roller but the pulpit was in the way.
So here we go.
I went in search of a suitable pole. I looked at the club at old masts off of small boats discarded. None were perfectly round. Then there it was a mast off of a wind 🏄‍♂️ surfer. It had been there for the eighteen year I had and I never saw a surfboard. With permission it was mine. I measured out 27” off of the roller to clear the pulpit and about 27” to a back support pin just in front of the anchor locker. I cut the mast to 65” made plugs for the ends and a jig to wrap carbon fibre and fibre glass cloth on for additional strength. After watching many videos it was recommended that you wrap the carbon with regular cloth so you do not sand into the carbon.
Just this week I wrapped 20” of carbon equaling ~3 wraps and 30” of regular cloth ~4 wraps. I have sanded it down to a respectable finish, mainly round. Next will be a couple coats of primer and paint. Epifanes paint is my go to finish.
I have about 10 pictures I would like to share and will have to send the in many emails unless I can figure out again how to group send them.

Thanks Chuck.  I do remember that article but I’m now realizing you do not have an anchor locker. That is one thing I had to consider as mine must be completely removable.

You are right.  I don't have an anchor locker.  

But my 8 foot long Selden pole extends to five feet beyond the headstay and is totally removable.  

It is presently stored inside my boat in the aft cabin for winter.  It also fits in the vee berth, or on deck.  

I am very familiar with windsurfing masts and have broken my share of fiberglass masts.  I still have several higher quality carbon masts, sails and boards for my wife and myself to enjoy blasting over the water, but alas, we got into wing foiling and the windsurfing toys remain home.   I hope you added a lot of carbon to your sprit.

I encourage you to share your project and your methods as it can help others.  I am jealous of the top down furler, but other owners have learned that a mast crane helps to extend the top swivel's attachment and keep it away from the jib top swivel, so both work better..
