Hello Scott,
I leave the aft engine access panel at the aft berth half open to allow heat to exit into the cabin.
Not great but haven't done anything fancier as of yet.

One great improvement to alternator temperature is a Balmar MC0618 multi-stage regulator for the after market Balmar alternator. It slow-starts the charging process which saves the belt and dust accumulation, as well as keeps the temperature lower. The old regulator was a General Motors thing from the 70s, not adequate for charging AGMs and also led to alternator belt wear and subsequent alternator overheating...

Hi all,

I have taken over ownership of a 1990 34+ from my father in law and we have
sold our previous J/30 which I had for 16 years and knew inside and out. I
am sure I will have lots and lots of questions while I learn this new
vessel. It is definitely the perfect upgrade for us.

The biggest downside I see is this tiny engine compartment. Cramped
maintenance maneuvers aside, it doesn't seem to have clear ventilation to
keep the temps down. Has anyone come up with a means to improve airflow? I
am thinking if I upgrade the batteries and start putting more load on an
upgraded alternator, the ambient temperatures may affect charging
performance.

Of the top of my head, maybe some sort of forced air duct back under the
fuel tank following the exhaust outlet to the aft lazarettes.

Thanks!
Scott
