I stayed on the boat last night during a heavy rain to try to track down some leaks in the cabin.  I found water was dripping down from the teak trim strip under the windows on both sides.  It looks like it might be coming from the windows, but I am unconvinced as they look very well sealed from the outside.  The curious thing is that the leak is on both sides of the cabin in the same place fore/aft.  It is above where the vertical plate is in the cabin which I presume is part of the shroud attachment.  I am wondering if it could be coming from the deck organizers which are on both sides near this location and then leaking down the cabin roof to the window area.  Has anyone found the deck organizer to be leak prone or rebedded them and had it fix a leak?  The most likely alternative seems to be the hand rails, but I don't see why that would be in one place fore/aft and the same place on both sides.  Thanks- Dave

Hello david,

Sorry for your issues . Leaks on a boat can be problematic and discouraging.

My advice is to wait for drying and then with an open end hose start at the chain plates, windows, deck organizers and work your way vertical to mast collar to check for source of water.

Good luck

It seems every year or two, my deck develops another nagging leak which I try to chase down to seal.  My deck organizers were leaking a few years ago so I removed both and rebedded with butyl rubber.  They were also tired looking, so I took the opportunity to clean them up and paint them.

To confirm they’re the leak culprit, remove the hole plugs and check the bolts for drips when it’s raining or hose test as Blair suggested.

My exterior hand rails were also leaking prior to that.  When I removed them to re-bed, I was amazed to see they were drilled through unsealed balsa core which had been getting wet!  So removed both hand rails, routed out the balsa from each hole, let dry for several days, filled with thickened epoxy, redrilled, etc.

I re-bedded  my starboard chain plate several years ago. It was leaking badly.  It’s actually pottery straightforward but hard work. On my boat the assembly is one piece. There is s cover on the inside that cosmetically hides the inside hole. The hardest part of the removal is dislodging the chain plate at the deck. Once the screws are out you have to wrestle the 3m 5200 adhesive sealing the assembly.  This required lots of levering on the side deck back and forth. Very hard work. Once displaced, I scraped the deck as best i could and sealed it on the deck side before replacing the screws. The repair stopped the leak but it wasn’t pretty. The next season i did some research on how to remove set 5200, but that’s a different story. Heat gun and some agent paste did the trick. I think i have the remnant tube on the boat if you get that far. I recommend you find a retired college linebacker to help you out on the deck. Photos below.

David - I have similar leaks on both sides.  I have narrowed it down to the windows.  I noticed the corners while appearing to be completely sealed were pulling away slightly.  Try pushing on the corners - if there is flex they could be pulling away. The windows were redone in 2018.  Looking at the invoice (thanks for keeping everything Fred) they used two sided tape to adhere the plexi then caulked.   I confirmed  this by removing some comprised caulk and trying to reseal with caulk - I could see the two tape when I pulled it apart slightly.  I plan on resealing them this fall.

I don't want to hijack David's thread, but any suggestions on resealing the windows would be appreciated.

thanks
Matt

Hi Matt- Can you send a photo of the window where you think it is leaking when you get a chance?  I will do the same, but will be out of town for a week, so next Saturday I should be able to do it.  Dave

I have a suggestion for sealing windows which, while it may not be permanent, is very easy. As long as the area pulling away is sufficiently narrow, try using “Captain Tolley’s Creeping Crack Cure”. It worked for me. Just run it into the gap and it sets up and seals.

Great suggestion….   It’s a great product. It stopped all the leaks on my boat.
