Hi Guys
I’m slowly losing motor powers this year. The maximum RPMi in neutral is 2600 and even lower when in gear. In the past I always get blue smoke when pushing the motor hard and it does disappear as the motor warms up but now getting blue smoke in neutral which is something new . The motor does burn oil so I’m constantly topping it up. Im suspecting the exhaust mixing elbow, but I’m not a sure.

Has anyone experienced the same? Appreciate your feedback

Thanks
Joe

Consistent blue smoke sounds like ring issue where oil - blowthrough is getting past the rings / into the combustion chamber, low power maybe associated with the ring / compression issue. The blue smoke disappearing after it warmed up was a sign that it was sealing better as the metal expanded, but an issue was developing.

In any case, from here it looks like a rebuild or re-power.  I had a clogged elbow in the past,  it got bad enough to eventually almost completely block the flow of water and that ruined the salt water pump / caused the engine to run hot, but it didn't really impede the engine from revving.

Bottom line, it sounds like fairly serious mechanical issues, you need to have it looked at by a diesel mechanic you can trust.

Sorry for the bad news,  I hope I'm wrong...

Hi Fancois

Great explanation and will take your advise finding  a mechanic to look at it..    Just to complicate this further,  I started the engine yesterday,  no blue smoke and was able to rev the motor over 3000rpm in Neutral.   Don’t understand what changed   but it put a smile on my face.    Hopefully  I will get the same results tomorrow when I go for a motor ride.

Question:   Does  the motor beep when its running to hot.

Thanks

Joe

Hi Joe,

Good news on the latest, it may be fuel delivery related and not quite as dear to fix as the rings.  Yes, it should beep when it's hot, assuming your temp sensor is working correctly. On my standard Yanmar panel, it's the same beep as the low oil pressure signal, the one you hear when you turn on the ignition, before you start the engine and it builds enough oil pressure to silence it. Mine also has a red "Temp" light that comes on.
