Host of events to mark wildlife week
Manka Behl | Oct 1, 2015, 02.30 AM ISTTo start the activities, the forest department has organized an inaugural function of wildlife week on Thursday at Van Sabhagruha, Seminary Hills. The chief guests of the function will be principal chief conservator of forest (head of forest force) AK Nigam, principal chief conservator of forest (wildlife) Sarjan Bhagat and principal chief conservator of forest (Production and Management) ASK Sinha.
Apart from this, the department has chalked out other events including powerpoint presentation competition and wildlife quiz on Friday, bird race at Ambazari garden on Sunday, workshop for all stakeholders like eco-development committee members, forest guides, women self-help groups, bamboo workers at Chandrapur on Tuesday.
This time, the department has also roped in city's green schools in the celebrations and will be holding various interschool cultural activities like skit, group song, story recitation, dance drama and musical ballet. The winners of these competitions will get a chance to perform in front of state chief minister Devendra Fadnavis at a cultural and award ceremony scheduled on Wednesday at Vasantrao Deshpande Hall. On the same day, the transit treatment centre for wild animals at Seminary Hills will also be inaugurated.
Satpuda Foundation is all geared up to run a massive awareness campaign during the wildlife week during which importance of protecting endangered species will be explained to local tribal students. Said Satpuda Foundation chief Kishor Rithe, "The programmes will be conducted in Kanha, Pench, Satpuda, Tadoba-Andhari, Navegaon-Nagzira and Melghat tiger reserves. We will also organize cleanliness campaigns in buffer villages and will spread awareness on avoiding human wildlife conflict."
In an unique initiative, the Melghat Tiger Reserve is organizing a seven-day Kula volleyball trophy tournament in association with Gram Parisar Vikas Samiti, Borikheda and Disha foundation for which around 150 teams have been roped in from 70 villages in buffer area. During the tournament, the participants will take a common pledge to protect and conserve tiger and forests. "The Korku Adivasis are among the most backward communities and volleyball is their favourite game. So, we decided to involve the locals in protecting forests by making them play their most-loved sport," said MTR assistant conservator of forests (ACF) Vishal Mali.
