Overwhelmingly acknowledged and widely accepted is the
fact that Vastu is not an empirical science. Till
today it has neither been proved through analytical
tests nor has it been substantiated with convincing
evidence by anyone in any part of the world.
Vastu cannot also be considered either as a form of
art or a kind of architecture. If at all it is assumed
as a form of an art or architecture, naturally, it has
to be better accomplished only by the aesthetic sense
of an artist or the intellectual excellence of an
architect, and certainly not irrational convictions of
a vastu sasthri.
If vastu is, as claimed and believed to be by the
innumerable gullible, really a determinant of one's
fortunes, fate and future, then people belonging to
all walks of life irrespective of all the other
factors have to be always happy, successful and
fortunate by building or residing in a house built
according to vastu sastra. And then, poverty, failure
and misfortune will have neither any relevance nor any
presence anywhere else in the world. There will then
be no disparity or dichotomy in the society as the
haves and the have-nots, the blessed and the cursed,
the blissful and the miserable, the priviledged and
the underprivileged and so on. And consequently, our
nation need not undergo the stress and strain of a
growing nation as it is now. With the blessings and
benedictions of these vastu sastheries, India would
easily become a super power.
Even though the believers in and the promoters of
vastu sastra claim that vastu is a vedic science,
which has immense validity and proof in the Vedas,
scriptures and temple architecture and sculpture, so
far, it has not been proved beyond doubt or criticism
by anyone.
Facts or Myths:
1. The South-west or North-west corner of a house has
to accommodate the Bedroom according to vastu.
In a tropical country of India's geographical
dimensions, the western side remains hot most of the
day. If the bedroom is located in any part of the
western side can anyone enjoy with the presence of the
heat and the radiation during the day and the impact
of both in the night? Perhaps, only the privileged few
can enjoy their sleep with the mercy of an
air-conditioner or an air cooler.
2. Kitchen has to be in the South-east and the main
entrance also has to be in the same corner in a south
facing house.
Is this a possible proposition? Even if it is
feasible, it will definitely not be a sensible
proposition. Any one can easily imagine the
inconvenience created by such a proposition of having
a house which opens straightaway into the kitchen.
3. Toilets and septic tanks to be built in the
South-east / North-west corner of a house.
If every house is built according to this norm with
out taking into account the drainage and sewage
facilities and provisions found around the house, will
it not be a potential health hazard, besides the other
inconvenience ?
4. The water source (well/bore well) to be established
in the North-east and its overhead storage facilities
to be provided in the South-west.
If this proposition is adhered to in any building,
will it not cause undue immediate expenditure and
invite unnecessary complications in the supply system
later?
5. In cases of Industries and other installations, the
observance of the
norms and requirements of vastu sastra will beyond
doubt affect the fundamental pre-requisites and
principles of an industrial unit like the factory
layout, optimum utility, economic and effective
functioning, essential logistics which include
manpower planning, material management, materials
handling and so on. And, when vastu sastra is not
observed, it is not going to make our industrial unit
sick also.
Whether vastu is rational or irrational, necessary or
unnecessary, acceptable or unacceptable, we are indeed
witness to a large section of the society being
exploited for its gullibility by a microscopic
minority to its own advantage and minting money. These
days, the people being hypnotized by the clever
tactics of the vastu consultants are ready to
disbelieve and discredit the scientific rationale and
relevance of Engineering/Architecture. As a result
they forgo the technical merits of a building like
optimum utility, economic factor, aeratin,
ventilation, comforts, architectural beauty and
design, innovative technology and so on.
