Greetings MEG'ers,
It sure felt like a recession but apparently, according to just about every economic tracking group, there wasn't one.  Then again, based on all the job opportunities that keep pouring into our Group, I guess we might have known better.  Now we're getting stealth postings - confidential job opportunities.  That's a new one.  Not quite sure what to do with that.

In any event, please feel free to respond directly to the openings below or circulate to an appropriate party.  We're happy to continue to post news, events and further employment opportunities so feel free to keep sending them in.  Hope to see you at one of the dinners this summer or an open air Happy Hour.

By the way, below the career postings are various blatherings on industry news or other blatant courting of controversy.  Plus, a picture of Angelina Jolie never hurts circ.

Regards,
Kim Bangash

NEWS
Racking up the billions!  Apple announces it's 5 billionth song sold.  Each billion has been achieved in an increasingly shorter period of time.  Clearly, they still reign in audio.  Despite this Washington Post article, I says the jury is still out on video.

A curious tack, minisodes, being brought to TV courtesy of the writer's strike delay.  Can't quite see how this is going to be at all effective using old material, but they're giving it the ol college try.

Holly, meet Bolly. An interesting move if the company can maintain its cultural proclivity for conservative investments.  The odds and history are against it succeeding here (or any of their announcements at Cannes) but aren't the odds always against you?

DIFFERO
  • A sad loss.  Monster maker Stan Winston.  I knew Stan ever so briefly.  We were competitors of sorts on a project, but always a stand-up guy.

Angelina Jolie is still the must see It girl (all you Megan Fox fans can quit your griping right now) even in a limited role.  Opening this weekend: Wanted
P.S. prediction: Hellboy II will deliver the biggest bang for the buck of this summer's releases.

Dir. Timur Bekmambetov. US. 2008. 110 mins. Maximum violence and minimum plot works well for Wanted, a flashy comic book adaptation that marks the US debut of Night Watch director Timur Bekmambetov and the transformation of British actor James McAvoy into something resembling a Hollywood action hero. The formula may please the core fanboy audience, and the presence (albeit in a limited role) of co-star Angelina Jolie should broaden the appeal enough to produce at least mid-level box office and good video returns. With its R-rating and nihilistic feel, this amped-up actioner is travelling more along the lines of Sin City or 300, though, as opposed to the summer's more mainstream comic book-based hits.

This Spyglass production goes wide in North America on June 27 through worldwide distributor Universal as counterprogramming to Disney/Pixar's animated Wall-E. Universal will need to work fast to exploit the release slot and establish it before launching the similarly-targeted Hellboy II two weeks later.

  • Only the Dolans could manage to conjure up this baffling conflict.  No wonder they like goons on their team.

  • Methinks the Post thinks very little of the nabobs at NBC News

  • The Chinese government frequently complains about criticism it receives.  In fairness, often they are genuinely stuck between a rock and a hard place.  Othertimes, they're knee deep in the spin cycle - a charade exploited by autocratic regimes and White House administrations alike.  The Chinese government should be commended for the acknowledgement of a missing POW from the Korean War.  The 56.com situation is a little more suspect.  Back page of the B section for the WSJ.
