Greetings colleagues,
Too long since our last issue. Let's get back to business with an Events posting. Later this week, we'll update our Career Opportunities posts.
We hope you find the events below of interest. Of course, if you have news, events or job openings that you'd like to circulate, please feel free to send in and share. Thanks.
Hope to see you at our upcoming open air Happy Hour (TBA).
Regards,

NEWS
So the
Yankees will be the first Major League Baseball team to
stream their games live on the Web. Of course, it's restricted to the local market so as not to compete with the awesome
MLB.TV service. Guess it must be because of the ridiculous seat prices at their new stadium (which might as well be named Coors Field for the equally ridiculous homerun friendly design).
Top Ten things overlooked in the departure of Jay Leno from The Tonight Show? Number 1: poor old
Nightline getting the
Rodney Dangerfield treatment (btw, if you ever need a good joke, hit Rodney's official site). Nightline has been regularly challenged, tied or beaten Late Show. And this year has
outperformed Late Show all year long and usually surpasses Late Show in the A18-49 category. I guess that's why CBS was able to re-up Letterman at a lower price. Don't cry for Dave; he still makes $30mm a year and owns the show himself.
And, finally, since we did a Letterman story, how about a research report from his alma mater Ball State. Despite the item above, most media execs know you can't trust much information out of
Nielsen, putting aside the issue that you have no choice but to do so. So one should be all the more suspicious of a Nielsen-commissioned research study. However, Ball State has distinguished itself nicely over the last decade so they should be given the benefit of the doubt despite the shocking headline:
99% of all video viewing is on a TV screen. Whoa. Online viewing stats are overstated, but by this much? Check out the other report in the survey about how presumed pirates are actually large legal consumers of media (which is really just a way of differentiating active online users from real pirate thieves).

Big and powerful companies have something you don't: time. While the dream of scoring an outrageously successful partnership with a market goliath is enticing, the odds are, it ain't gonna happen. From unequal bargaining power to rights of first refusal, partnership land mines are one of the most misunderstood and underrated topics in the startup world.
