Greetings Colleagues,

After the stomach churning ride last week, we thought you could use a Happy Hour.

Details below.  Pontificating first.

 

Talk about the effects of the media era.  I guess in the 24 hour news cycle, you're not allowed to have a recession.  Red Chinese investors must be scratching their heads this weekend as they witness the capitalist West bail out banks, ban short selling and take over publicly traded companies, while their own government has let dozens of banks fail just in the past year alone.

 

On that note, what's to blame for all this?  Many think the greedy markets need greater regulation.  But could the opposite (also) be true?  Did Sarbanes-Oxley help identify any of the problems.  Indeed the dreaded 3 words "Mark To Market" became a vicious accounting downward spiral.  I don't know if there was criminality, but if there was, it will likely go unpunished.  Still, it is an election year and pols love to see someone do the 'perp walk.'  Shortsellers? CEOs? Mortgage brokers?  Ratings agencies? Raines & Dodd?  Good thing oil broke or this really might have been a shyte storm.

 

Imprison the lobbyists and some of their corporate masters and maybe we'll be impressed.  In the meanwhile, who knows? Maybe Paulson will masterfully navigate through financial armeggedon. Or how about this scenario: Hank Greenberg reinstalled at AIG with funding from Warren Buffett and Dick Grasso (thru a company called SpitzerWasRight, LLC), reviving the company and returning a profit to US taxpayers. And Ralph Nader winning the election. Yeah, if you can hold your breath longer than Greenspan held down rates.

 

Whoa, sorry 'bout all that.
