Greetings all.

Just a few quick follow-ups on where we stand with the book drive.

1.       I just got off the phone with O. Perry Walker’s librarian, Lauren Goldman, and she has arranged for the drop-off of the books on Monday morning at 10:00AM to have a ceremonial feel to it. Their choir will be performing and members of their student government will be present to receive the books. William Wolf and Anna Frachou have agreed to be there for that, but I think that we might need a few more people to help unload the books and such.

2.       My house will be serving as a staging ground for an Uptown drop-off site on Saturday, November 14 from 10:00AM-2:00PM. 1726 Broadway. I am hoping that we will cause a minor traffic jam on Broadway J. I could use some help on Saturday. I will make a big pot of coffee and a slow cooker of meaty beans and rice to share. I’ll bring a sign up sheet tonight for folks to sign up in one hour increments for Saturday. I imagine there will be some heavy lifting but there are non-lifting details to be taken care of as well if you have a bad back and still want to help on Saturday.

3.       We could use someone to volunteer a location on the West Bank as a drop-off spot on Saturday. If someone has a good location where books could be held over the weekend to then be delivered to the school Monday morning, please just step up. Set your own hours and let everyone know. We would then need some folks to help that person as well.

4.       We will need someone(s) to pick up books from my house Monday morning, preferably between 8:00-9:00 AM to drive them over to O. Perry Walker (presumably to also stay for 1 above). Lauren can receive the books before 10:00 Monday if you need to just drive, drop and get to work. I CANNOT DO THIS AS I WILL BE IN SAN DIEGO. My husband leaves for work by 9:00, so it would be great if the books were loaded up and ready to go by then. I’ll have a sign up sheet for this as well.

5.       If you are getting any large donations, ie from bookstores, community organizations or what not, please get contact information from the group so that we can do some follow up thank you letters for them. (Or pass that information on to Lauren so that she can get her students to write the thank yous, or both). If someone would like to take charge of this as your contribution to the project, that would be excellent. Pam has lined up some great donations from all sort of interesting organizations. I’ll let her fill you in on those details.

6.       Below my signature line, I have pasted in the less formal e-mail that I sent to all of my friends and colleagues. Feel free to adapt it and forward it to everyone that you know. If you want to gather books elsewhere and then transport them to my house as the central staging ground, that would be fine. My husband will be around all weekend, so could arrange to meet you and help you unload.

7.       Please don’t feel constrained by my ideas about this. If you have some other idea for getting books, just jump right in and do it.

See you all tonight.

Amy

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I am participating in a group that is organizing a book drive to rebuild O. Perry Walker High School’s library. If you have any new or gently used books or music CDs or documentaries that you would like to donate to this cause, please bring them to 1726 BROADWAY between 10:00AM-2:00PM on Saturday, November 14.

The school is also seeking donations of New Orleans-themed art, photographs, etc to decorate the space.

The books will be delivered to O. Perry Walker on Monday, November 16. You can certainly send books or funds to the school directly after that date. Let me know if you need O. Perry Walker’s librarian’s contact information for that.

A wish list is below my signature line, but ANYTHING would be great. They are quite honestly working with a room full of empty bookshelves.

I have a more formal letter if you would like to forward it. Just send me an e-mail and I will attach it.

All my best,
