Hi everyone,

The survey results are in, and the majority voted in favor in Gina
Swanson's concept to donate books to a school or a library. Congrats
Gina! Now it's time to mobilize.

The group will meet prior to the forum Wednesday at 5:30 during dinner
to discuss the project and committees. Last Wednesday, several group
members, during informal conversation, proposed some ideas for the
projects. That info is as follows:

1. Identify a school or library. This will include determining age
appropriate books, which will factor in the types of books we're
soliciting

2. Solicit book donations (Hornets, First Book, YLC's One Book One New
Orleans).

3. Organize a book donation day (maybe a Saturday) when people can
drop off books

4. Coordinate a book donation day at a school, venue, etc.

5. Hold a conference call to abate late meetings or conflicting
schedules for group meetings

6. Identify and assign committees

7. Draft a plan/outline to decide what we want to do and how

8. We're working on a short time frame

9. Corporate sponsorships (ENTERGY)

10. Publicize project

Just a quick note regarding the donation of books to schools; Last year
when my group volunteered at McDonogh #42 Charter, one of the
initiatives we were exploring including replenishing the library. The
librarian was thrilled however she indicated there is a "list" of
approved books one must secure before donating books to schools. Perhaps
someone should reach out to the school system to verify? We don't want
to collect hundreds of books only to be told we can't give them to the
school of our choice. Thanks.

Good call Dawn! It would be great if you had a connection to the librarian, or if someone connected to the school systems could could get that list. Any takers? Please let us know.

Very important, Dawn! Also, there are many schools that don't have the capacity to accept book donations (staff time and/or facility space). So, I would only reiterate that assessing schools' needs, capacity, and donation restrictions is an extremely important initial step that will probably take up some time.

Regarding the "approved book list", there are probably a few different lists (at a minimum), given the different systems (RSD, OPSB, BESE) and governing boards (many charter orgs) so be careful to attach approved lists with the schools for whom they are approved if you go that route.

I have contacted New Orleans Outreach to see if they had a school in mind that had both the capacity to accept a donation as well as the need. I also work with One Book One New Orleans and have contacted our project leader to see if there are any leftovers from our program (which is likely).

While we wait to find out what school and books are needed, should we start identifying a date and location for the drive? Scheduling is usually the hardest part.

I've reached out to a contact @ JP schools and a press person for a few Orleans schools as well an employee of Orleans schools. Between all of us, something should fall through soon.

Linzy- You're right. We should work on scheduling. That way, our plan would seem more solid once presented to schools.

Cool beans but my hope is that we are working with only schools in New Orleans.
