Develop five (5) informed steps to improve the education of children in Orleans Parish.
Create a mentoring program that focuses on business competency and job skills, financial literacy, and community involvement. These areas of emphasis could be catered to all grade levels.
Create an educational or internship program (similar to dual enrollment) where students who attend community college and 4-year universities can learn technical skills on how to meet future job demands.
Book drive or library rebuilding project. Project: Group participants gather 5 - 10 age appropriate books (new, used, or solicited) to help rebuild/fortify a public school library.
Partner with New Orleans Outreach's Public Education project. New Orleans Outreach partners resources and volunteers with schools for various needs. New Orleans Outreach gives public school students access to meaningful experiences that increase academic success, develop skills, and inspire them to participate fully in community life. Outreach recruits, trains, and places teachers, artists and volunteers in the classroom during the school day, after school, and in the summer.
Set up some type of "Get into College Workshops." This fall, I have just established a High School Program called LatiNola Youth Leadership Council (LYLC). Similar to New Orleans Outreach, the LYLC is tailored to each school and its needs. I have noticed that there is a need for more support, advising and guidance in assisting students to consider, apply, and get into college. It doesn't necessarily have to be workshops, but perhaps along the lines of college access . . .
Project should develop around a goal then expand organically from a solid collaboration of participants. THE PROBLEM being addressed to improve educational outcomes for public school students in New Orleans: *LACK OF PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT (with "parent" broadly defined) THE SOLUTION: *Work with a school's or set of schools' (like UNO's Charter Network for example) administration, parents, teachers and students (if applicable for older children) to design and implement a "MODEL: PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT POLICY" based on best practices with community and others' input. THE REASON to address this particular problem: *Decades of research show when parents are involved in their child's education, students have generally have higher grades, test scores, and graduation rates; increased self-esteem, motivation and school attendance rates; lower rates of suspension; decreased use of drugs and alcohol; and fewer instances of violent behavior.
