Good Morning Everyone:

If you have time, please take a look at the following website. I think it would a great partner for us to work with for our Public Education project. New Orleans Outreach - http://www.nooutreach.org/. I have a contact over there if we decide tonight to get involved.

Briefly...

Mission
The mission of New Orleans Outreach is to improve the quality of public education at our partner schools. We do this by linking volunteers and community resources through programs that respond to the needs of each school. New Orleans Outreach gives public school students access to meaningful experiences that increase academic success, develop skills, and inspire them to participate fully in community life. Outreach recruits, trains, and places teachers, artists and volunteers in the classroom during the school day, after school, and in the summer.

Programs http://www.nooutreach.org/programs/
The following (CliffsNotes version for those in a rush) is from their website (which sounds like they can connect us easily with a school/program in need):
  • Rather than approaching a school with a set agenda, we find out exactly what resources are needed to help their students succeed and then we go out and find those resources.
  • If it’s afterschool programming, we sit down with school leaders and design a schedule of classes – from cooking to dance to computers and more – then we seek volunteers and paid partners who can provide those classes when needed.
  • If it’s tutoring, we design the kind of tutoring program that the school wants, whether it’s during the school day, after school hours, or during the summer.
  • If it’s school beautification, we seek volunteers to paint, plant, and beautify dreary campuses.
  • If it’s a highly specialized need, we may develop a completely new program like Power Ties, which came about as a result of a school’s need to teach 8th graders about career options and job search skills.
  • Over the years we’ve developed a strong expertise in some specialized programming streams but continue to change and grow based on schools’ changing needs.
This was just a thought I had, but wanted to give you all an opportunity to look at the materials before tonight's class.

See you then!

Hello!

I hope everyone had a great week! Although we are meeting tonight, I wanted to get my idea out along with the others for some consideration.

A project idea I had is to set up some type of "Get into College Workshops." This Fall I have just established a High School Program called the LatiNola Youth Leadership Council (LYLC). Similar to New Orleans Outreach, the LYLC is tailored to each school and its needs. I have noticed that there is a need for more support, advising and guidance in assisting students to consider, apply, and get into college.   It doesn't necessarily have to be workshops, but perhaps along the lines of college access. This also reminds me of our discussion with Andre Perry  last week when he began discussing the article that could be discouraging students to pursue a higher education.

This is just an idea that could use some more brainstorming and can be taken into consideration along with the others to be furthered discussed this evening.

I really look forward to seeing you all tonight!

Enjoy the day!

Best,

Anna Frachou
