Please see the following message from Mr. Mark Bailey, Assistant Principal at O.P. Walker.  He says that their library has set empty for years. This is something for us to consider.

We are in the process of rebuilding our library. It has basically been an empty room with shelves for years and we recently hired a teacher to assist us with building our library. It has come a long way in three months but has much farther to go. We could always use some more assistance from the community. If there is a specific individual, I will put them in touch with Ms. Goldman, our current librarian.

Mr. Bailey,

I'm working on another project through this leadership forum, and we're looking to help build a library at a school. Ms. Leslie Ellison, an Algiers resident and community leader, noted that you all may need help in this area. If so, please let me know.

I really think that we should establish criteria that the group would like for a recipient school (or schools?) to meet before even beginning to consider which school/schools should be chosen as our donation beneficiary(ies). As we all know, historically, New Orleans has operated on a "who you know" or "those with resources get resourced" basis which has led to inefficiency and inequity, among other things. I'm suggesting establishing criteria for the book drive's recipient school(s) as a way to overcome those pitfalls as we would simply set the criteria and measure schools against that criteria. For me, I think we should try to identify the neediest school that can utilize the books. Of course, that doesn't mean that the group feels the same way... which is another reason to have the group establish the criteria together. Sorry guys, but I don't think that this is an exercise that we can do via email, either.

To summarize, I suggest that the agenda tomorrow evening include establishing criteria to select recipient school(s).

Angela

I am happy leaving it up to the book committee to decide. That will help to cut down on the amount of people to allow a core group to determine criteria and then sort through the number of schools.

Greetings Education team members!

I agree with Niya. I would like to nominate O. Perry Walker High
School in Orleans Parish
on the West Bank, which is next to my job at Delgado Community
College- West Bank Campus. There library does not have any books and
it is supposedly a Charter School, but I do not see much progress.
In
addition, I can get in touch with Delgado's get in touch with Linda
Duerson, Delgado's City Park reading Instructor who procures books
from book sales for DCC students and Ms. Shanna Clevenger who is the
Assistant Librarian at Delgado's West Bank Campus. What are your
thoughts?

Sincerely,
Pam Chappelle-Lyons, M.Ed.
