Opportunity CBS alum small business: digital marketing strategy project

We have an immediate opportunity for a small business that might be of great value to a company started by a recent CBS alumnus who went through the Lang Center, or is a current member of the Columbia Business Lab.

As part of my “Digital Marketing Strategy II” Executive Education program in June, Prof. David Rogers is looking to invite one small business or nonprofit to work with a team of executives in the program to help develop a digital marketing strategy for their business.

This opportunity would be free to the “project” organization who is submitting a digital marketing challenge. They would not be enrolled in the DMS II program, but would have the chance to work directly with the executives who are.

The ideal small business would:

  • be up and running, with a clear sense of its various customer types (not still in pre-launch stage)
  • be facing a clearly articulated marketing challenge (not simply “we need to raise awareness”)
  • believe that digital technology will be crucial to the right marketing strategy (e.g. social media, video, mobile apps, online content, crowdsourcing, etc.)
  • be prepared to invest resources (combination of time, money, and technical skills) in executing the right strategy

The participating small business would be expected to:

  • complete a project assessment in advance of the program (explaining business and marketing objectives, who are the key customers, resources available, etc.)
  • meet with the program team on-campus (NYC) during part or all of both days on the on-site executive program

The participating small business would receive:

  • Strategic planning help from a team of 3-5 experienced and senior marketing executives from diverse backgrounds (marketers have come previously from Bulgari, Amazon, Johnson & Johnson, and the Associated Press, among others)
  • Advance project work by the team before the class
  • 2 full days’ strategy development work by the team on-site at Columbia, following the class’s strategic planning process, and under coaching supervision of the faculty
  • Summary digital marketing strategic plan presented at end of the 2nd day

The next iteration of the program will run on June 26-27.  So, the prof. is hoping to pick a project for that session in the next 2-3 weeks.

If anyone is interested, please contact Mayra Reyes (mr2...@columbia.edu) with your 1 pager and contact info.

The professor will follow up with an interview.

Traditional marketing channels such as print, radio, and television have been around for decades and can be measured easily. But digital channels such as online ads, social media, and email have revolutionized the way companies communicate with their customers
