Hello,

Today I've been unable to access any cBioPortal.org domain. The website seems to load but it displays a blank page. I've tried via chrome, safari, and my mobile device. Yesterday, I was able to access the datasets without issue.

Has this happened before? Should I be doing something else?

I appreciate any correspondence and will continue to try.

Thanks,

Alex

Dr. Cohen,

This happens for us from time to time. The issue is almost always your organization's firewall. The cBioPortal website uses a content delivery network called Netlify to host many static parts of the site. My guess is that your organization's firewall is blocking some of our netlify content. Here are some steps you can take to verify and mitigate this:

Verification:
  • On your phone, turn off your wifi, then try to load the cBioPortal website. If the website loads, this is likely a firewall issue.
  • (Advanced) In Chrome, load the website, then open up the Chrome debugger (ctrl + shift + i). You should see some red ERR_CERT_INVALID messages in the console. Copy the corresponding URL for one of these messages, open up your terminal, and run a curl command that looks like this: curl -k the.url.that.you.copied. You should see a message about the website being blocked.
Mitigation:
  • Contact your IT Help Desk and ask them to whitelist netlify. Your mileage may vary on this, but it's worth a try.
  • Wait a little while. I don't know what heuristics firewalls use to determine what content they block, but they never seem to block netlify for us for more than a few hours.
Thank you for letting us know about this, and I hope this helps!

Luke
