An announcement via group member Andy Thompson:

THE BUSINESS HISTORY DIVISION OF ASB

IN CONJUNCTION WITH
THE UK MANAGEMENT HISTORY RESEARCH GROUP
CALL FOR:
Scholarly Papers - Symposia - Professional Development Workshops

The BUSINESS HISTORY division of the 2014 Atlantic Schools of Business conference in conjunction with the UK MANAGEMENT HISTORY RESEARCH GROUP (MHRG) call for scholarly papers, symposia and professional development workshop proposals.   An international constituent is expected this year and thus submissions are encouraged from North America, Europe and beyond.  A special Issue in the journal Management & Organizational History titled  "Re-visiting the Historic Turn 10 years later: Current Debates in Management and Organizational History" has been developed to which the Business History division co-conveners will encourage authors to submit their manuscripts.  Though papers in later stages of development are likely to be considered for inclusion in the special issue, ASB in general and the Business History division specifically invites papers from all areas of management and business history, in universities and outside, targeting research at any stage of development.

The meeting will take place on the beautiful campus of Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU), Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada from September 26 - 28, 2014.  Please consider submitting your scholarly papers, symposia and professional development workshop proposals to this unique and friendly venue.

Themes we wish to explore.

While we are particularly interested in papers, symposia and PDWs that focus on the themes below, we are open to ideas that extend beyond these and add to the existing debates taking place within Management and Organizational History as well as Business History.  The themes of interest include:

.Doing theory in MOS & M&OH: how to theorize the 'data' while still maintaining space to tell the story of the past.
.Talking Methods at the Intersection of M&OS and M&OH: Implications for doing archival research, using New Institution Theory in history, employing Actor-Network Theory, etc.
.The Future of the Past in M&OH:  where have we been and where are we going?
.Learning from the past: histories, stories, and/or narratives of doing business, managing and organizing.
.Revisiting the past: looking at management and organizational histories through new or different lens'

Though most of the list of themes above coincide with those outlined in the Management & Organizational History special issue, all themes outlined in the special issue call are deemed relevant for the ASB Business History Division/MHRG sessions at ASB 2014.

Guidelines for submissions

Guidelines for submissions can be found at: http://asb.acadiau.ca/index.html.  Scholarly papers, symposium and PDW proposals will be reviewed following a double-blind peer-review process.  Deadline for submissions for symposia and PDWs is June 30, 2014 and for papers July 31, 2014.  Submissions should be made via email to the respective person below:

Getting Here

About the Atlantic Schools of Business

The Atlantic Schools of Business Conference is one of Canada's longest running academic business conferences.  Though projects are underway to fully explore its history, this conference attracts about 100 academics annually from across the East Coast Canada and beyond.   ASB (as it is commonly known) attracts scholarly papers in a diversity of areas including (but not limited to) Business History, Marketing, Organization Theory, Human Resources and Industrial Relations, Management Education, Entrepreneurship and beyond.

The conference typically takes place over three days during the last weekend of September. The Friday afternoon is usually devoted to a lively doctoral consortium with the evening dedicated to a welcome reception at the hosting university.  Saturday and Sunday are reserved for scholarly paper presentations, PDWs and symposia.  A banquet dinner including an awards reception is hosted on the Saturday night.  Individual awards are given for Best Overall Conference Paper, and Best Student Paper.  Institutional awards including the Research Excellence Award and a Best Overall Performance Award are also allocated to deserving universities.

Strangers to ASB who have attended the conference have described the conference as welcoming, unique and fun.  We hope you will join us!

About the MHRG

The MHRG is a collective of scholars interested in the potentials to be found in the intersectional spaces between History, Organization Studies and Business History.  The MHRG fosters a friendly and informal atmosphere concerning management history (broadly defined), including ideas affecting the management history community of researchers.
