Message From the President
Shalom, Chaverim! Congratulations to all of you on making it through
the long set of Chagim over the past month. You made it though Rosh
Hashana, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah. Wow! A
lot of holidays in a short amount of time. I want to thank everyone
who attended our annual volunteer event Hanging in the Hut! We had over
50 attendees and celebrated another year of our success. Now, looking
forward we have many events in store -- the community "To Life" Festival, our second Wednesday Meet and Greet Dinner at Amarin Thai, and our "Get To Know Your Own Backyard Trip to the Gold Country". I invite all to attend these amazing events.
We have many more things in store in the upcoming weeks and months and I
would love for everyone to be apart of it. Stay tuned for upcoming
events and programs. We also have our General Volunteer Meeting on Wednesday, October 27. This is the place for you to share your ideas for events, programs and your thoughts on what you want Jews' Next Dor to be.
Jews' Next Dor is here for you. Our organization is fully
volunteer-run, and volunteer-led. Your ideas are important and we want
to hear from you. Please talk to any and all of our officers to learn
more about the organization.
Thank you all! See you soon at our events.
B'shalom,
Sari Wisch, President
Jews' Next Dor, Congregation Beth David's Young Adult Group
Introducing the Board: Shelli Carol, Outreach Officer
Hi, I'm Shelli. As Outreach Officer, my job is to be half an ambassador
and half a brand manager. I work to maintain the consistency of the
Jews' Next Dor "personality" as a friendly, fun, and inclusive group,
throughout all our contacts with you, our members. That goal
occasionally requires some market research, so expect to hear from me in
the coming months for a few focus groups and surveys. I also interface
with the area's other young adult groups to coordinate calendars and
plan community-wide events like the upcoming "Light It Up" Chanukah
Party on December 4!
Lastly, I assure that new attendees feel included and create promotional
tools to recruit new members. Speaking of which, here is my requisite
plug for inclusion: When you were a new member, did you get more
enjoyment out of a) being asked what you do for a living, or b) being
included by an established member into a session of ridiculous jokes, a
passionate conversation about sports, or a random children's game in a
park? ;)
I've lived in many Jewish communities over the years, and I don't think I
have ever encountered a group anywhere with the warmth and dedication
that I find every day in Jews' Next Dor and its many volunteers. We are
truly blessed to live in such an active community. Our extended family
keeps us keeping on through the worst and celebrates with us in our
joy. The resiliency and synergy are why community-building it is so
precious to me and why I love my job so much.
If growing the community and attracting new members are important to
you, too, and if you'd like to take a more active role in expanding the
Jews' Next Dor family, you can always reach out to me or any of the
Jews' Next Dor Governing Committee Members. In the meantime, I look
forward to seeing you at future Jews' Next Dor events!
Shavuah tov,
Shelli

In front of Starbucks -- 361 S. California Ave., Palo Alto, CA
Jews' Next Dor heads to Palo Alto for "To Life: A Jewish Cultural
Street Festival". Join us for art, music, dance, and, of course, food!
This is a great way to learn about the Jewish community in Silicon
Valley. There will also be many booths featuring local Jewish
organizations who will have information about what is happening in our
community.
We will meet at 2pm in front of Starbucks. The festival ends at 5 pm.
California Avenue will be closed to traffic; parking is available on the
side streets. "To Life" is sponsored by the Oshman Family JCC in Palo Alto. More information on the festival.

October
13th, 7:00pm-9:00pm
Amarine Thai Cuisine -- 176 Castro St., Mountain View, CA
In October, Jews Next Dor's Meet and Greet is going Thai. Join us at
Amarin Thai in Mountain View for a delicious meal of roti, Thai salad,
yellow curry, pad thai, and cod cooking three ways. Please RSVP as soon
as you can so that we can order enough food for everyone to enjoy.
We'll be enjoying delicious vegetarian/dairy entrees family-style. The
cost will be no more than $20; please bring cash, and singles are
appreciated. RSVP to our Facebook event page or to jewsn...@beth-david.org.
Get to Know Your Own Backyard: Gold Country
October
17th, 8:30am-5:30pm
Carpool from the Warburton Park & Swim Center -- 2250 Royal Dr., Santa Clara, CA
Jews' Next Dor is introducing a new type of event, to recur on a
bimonthly schedule, every third Sunday: Get to Know Your Own Backyard!
The Bay Area has so many interesting places and attractions, yet many of
us don't even notice them as we go about our everyday lives. This
series will tend to consist of larger-scale events (think day long), and
will give us an opportunity to play tourist in our own homes.
To kick things off, we're checking out two examples of California as
Gold Country. After meeting at 8:30 AM in Santa Clara, carpools will
leave at 9:00 AM to head over to the Sutter Gold Mine (13660 Highway 49, Sutter Creek, CA, Yelp link),
arriving at approximately 11:30 AM. Here, the 1 hour Walk Tour is a
great lesson on gold mining from the earliest days to the present time.
This real mine experience begins with gearing up in hard-hats and
tagging in, then stepping aboard the Boss Buggy Shuttle for a historic
journey deep underground. Learn about Gold Country geology and mining
technology as you traverse beneath thousands of tons of native rock,
viewing mining equipment from the smallest drills to the massive 15-yard
haul truck. See beautiful crystals and learn how to distinguish between
real gold deposits and pyrite ("Fools Gold") in the quartz of the Comet
Vein. Includes a free movie. Optional activity: gold panning.
Then, around 1:00pm, we'll head over to Black Chasm Cavern (a national natural landmark, 15701 Volcano Pioneer Road, Volcano, CA 95689, Yelp link),
arriving around 1:30pm. There, the 50-minute Landmark Walk Tour follows
a series of stairs and walkways. This beautiful tour shows off some
world class formations, including vast arrays of rare helictite
formations. Currently, the cave tour culminates in a visit to the
Landmark Room, the location of the greatest collections of sparkling
helictite crystals.
Around 3:00pm we'll head back to the Bay Area, arriving around 5:30pm.
Please bring a paper bag vegetarian/dairy lunch for the trip. Please
post on the event wall if you are able to drive a carpool (with how many
people other than yourself you can accommodate); drivers will be
compensated for their gas by their passengers. Total cost for the trip
is $30 plus chipping in for gas at the discretion of your driver. Please
RSVP via Facebook or to jewsn...@beth-david.org.
Third Week Social Action: Blood Club
October
19th, 6:00pm-8:30pm
Stanford Blood Center -- 780 Welch Rd, Suite 100, Palo Alto, CA
Donating a pint of blood saves, on average, three lives. What an amazing
way to spend an hour of your time! Please join Jews' Next Dor for this
month's social action event. You can sign up for any appointment time
between 6:00pm and 7:30pm (please post your preferred time to the event
wall ahead of time, so we can get you signed up), and you should expect
your donation to last about an hour from start to finish. If you don't
sign up in time, you can still try to "walk in" to join us.
If you have never donated with Stanford before, they also request a
phone number, birthdate, and a photo ID. Please see the links provided
below for directions and Frequently Asked Questions. Please also pay
attention to the section on how best to prepare for donation.

Football Watching Party: Vikings @ Packers
October
24th, 5:00pm-9:00pm
Private Home -- Mountain View, CA
The Jews' Next Dor are meeting again for our "Bi-Monthly Fourth Sunday
Sports" to watch the Minnesota Vikings vs. the Green Bay Packers.
Jews' Next Dor is calling all armchair quarterbacks. Do you like
watching NFL games on an HDTV? Would you like to watch these games with a
group of people who will also be shouting at the professional athletes
on the screen how they could have done better? Do you know nothing about
football but would like to learn more about this bizarre ritual?
Then join us at a private home in Mountain View. You can RSVP on Facebook or by e-mailing jewsn...@beth-david.org (please put "NFL" in the subject). Address will be sent to all attendees before the event.
Please bring a vegetarian or dairy snack to share. The hosts will provide beverages.
Bi-Monthly Fourth Wednesday Volunteers Meeting
October
27th, 7:30pm-9:00pm
Private Home -- Mountain View, CA
Shalom Chaverim! Jews' Next Dor is planning its calendar of events for
the next several months and we need you! Jews' Next Dor is entirely
volunteer run; every event you have enjoyed before was made possible by
someone like you stepping up and making it happen.
Attending the bi-monthly Volunteer Meetings (on the fourth Wednesday of
the month) is your ticket to the inside scoop of what's coming up and
your chance to give back to the Jews' Next Dor community. If you want to
plan a Shabbat Potluck, a Meet & Greet, or something that Jews'
Next Dor has never done before, bring your ideas and your energy!
Of course, meetings are open to all, and showing up is not committing to
anything further. Volunteering with Jews' Next Dor is a rewarding
experience; we encourage all Jewish 20 & 30 somethings to get
involved with the Jews' Next Dor community!
Kiddush Klub
Every Saturday, 9:30am-1pm
Congregation Beth David -- 19700 Prospect Rd., Saratoga, CA
The Kiddush Klub is an informal gathering of Jews' Next Dor on our home
turf, Congregation Beth David,
on Shabbat mornings. Some of us come for services,
others just for lunch, we'd love for you to join us for either or both.
Services begin at 9:30am, but you're welcome to stumble in anytime.
Kiddush begins around noon (12pm). We will be near the back. Consider
this an open invitation to join us, and CBD, any Saturday morning.
A new Shabbat afternoon program with Rabbi Pressman and Rabbi
Ohriner after Kiddush lunch (about 1:30pm) on the first and third
Shabbat each month starting on October 2nd. A tisch in Hasidic circles
is an opportunity to gather at a table (tisch) with the rebbe to sing
Shabbat table songs and learn Torah. Rabbi Pressman and Rabbi
Ohriner cordially invite you to join them following Shabbat Kiddush
lunch for an informal opportunity to sing Shabbat table songs; learn
new melodies; and explore their meaning, history, and beauty.
