And I thought last month was bad...

Please, please tell me I'm not the only one in this boat. During
January (shown as Feb on the attached chart) we used 8805 kWh!!!!
That's a 74% increase over the previous month.

I know it's been a very cold month and the heat pumps aren't doing
anything below 37F or so, but I'm starting to wonder if I've got a
problem. If everyone else is in the same boat, then I guess it's just
COLD.

We jumped up to 5867 kWh in January. That is up from 5743 kWh in December.
I think the increase would have been a lot worse had we not been setting the thermostats back to 65 degrees during the daylight hours when we are away from the house and then back to 65 degrees when we go to sleep. We now keep the thermostats at 68 from 5AM to 7AM and then again from 4PM to 10PM.
Thanks again for sharing your SMECO information.

Chris,
Ours went from 3958 kwh ($600) to 5033 kwh ($719).  Increase, but not totally out of line.  You should have SMECO come out and check it out.  Maybe the building of the Daly's house has something to do with it.  Didn't they just move in and your kwh's jumped?  There is no way you could have used 8805!!

Hi All,
Our bill went from 3949kwh to 4720kwh...we have tried to 'economize' where possible, but this is still the highest bill we have had in a long time.

On the 8000+kwh usage, have your heat pumps checked for low charge.  We had the misfortune of having both go down at the same time over one winter and incurred a 12,000kwh bill. Yes, I didn't believe it, fought SMECO concerning it and ultimately they proved my meter was running SLOW...in the end, I had to pay the whole thing...thousands as I painfully recall.

We are switching to fluorescent bulbs and limiting the t-stat to 67F.

Our bill was $643 (and we are about 3,200 sq. feet)

we used 4496 Kwh

Last January we used 4079 Kwh

The bills are HIGHER because the rates went up.

We switched to all compact fluorescent lights (even did LED xmas lights this year) a year ago - spent a small fortune doing that, but...

It has had no impact what-so-ever because the rates have not remained constant.  It may help, but you are not going to notice a difference unless the rates stay the same.

We have a programmable thermostat.  From 6am-4pm it is set at 65, from 4pm-10pm it is set at 68, and from 10pm-4am it goes back down to 65.

We've been running the fireplace quite a bit...  we work full time, so there's hardly any electricity used during the day, except for the heatpump.  I do laundry every day and wonder if my clothes dryer is sucking up Kwh... maybe I will try to do laundry 3 x a week instead of every day (?)

Just not sure how to cut back anymore than we are...

I guess we all just have to put on more clothes when we are home so we don't go BROKE!

Brrr... hoping spring comes soon.
