Come learn how to play 3-4 song styles from West Africa on a variety of African drums and hand-held percussion instruments. Conceived as a fun and low-pressure class, sessions will focus on group drumming, rhythmic organization, playing techniques, and musical expression. Designed for a range of abilities, previous experience with percussion or music reading is welcome but not required nor necessary.
Music is taught within an oral tradition that utilizes direct demonstration and visual/aural cues, calling upon the student to merely listen, imitate, and gradually progress, eventually learning to attune with the group. Musical selections represent a rich caldron of African cultural traditions where people use drum ensembles for ceremonial activities, civic occasions, and recreational/social events. Instruments are provided.

The Community School of the Arts Youth Orchestra is a youth orchestra program geared for students between 5th-12th grades. Our programs include a "play-up" group for students with less experience, and the opportunity for all students to play in an orchestra made up of students from the wider community in a fun environment. Our current offerings are geared primarily for string players, with expansion into a full orchestra in the near future! Led by Indiana State orchestra conductor Erik Rohde, students will learn ensemble skills and hone their playing ability to become deeper musicians. Scholarships are available for students based on need (must be on free or reduced lunch plans at school to qualify). Join us for our exciting second season of the Community School of the Arts Youth Orchestra!
