Stop the Invasion of Hydrilla: An Eradication Update

Tuesday July 8, 2014: 6:30PM - 8:00PM

Large Pavilion at Stewart Park, Ithaca

Free

Find out what makes hydrilla such a formidable concern, the risks of not taking action, what is being done to try to eradicate hydrilla, and how decisions are made. The keynote presentation will be by James Balyszak, Hydrilla Project Manager. He will highlight successes from the 2013 season and plans for 2014. The session will also cover why invasives species are such a concern and other plants and animals that threaten Cayuga Lake and its tributaries.

The indoor program will be followed by a demonstration of sampling for hydrilla in the Stewart Park pond. A rake-toss sampling method will be demonstrated as an effective way to discover new hydrilla growth.  This program is part of NYS Invasive Species Awareness Week.

Endothall Herbicide Treatments:

Herbicide application in Fall Creek will take place on one to two days between July 7 and July 18.  Closure of Fall Creek for the application will affect the Cascadilla Boat Club docks and paddlers who launch from the Stewart Park pond.

The Cayuga Inlet will be closed to all boat traffic, for one or two days only, between July 21 and August 1.

Both closures will take place during the week (not over a weekend).  The exact dates will be based on the growth of hydrilla in each location and the weather.
