to Cayuga Hydrilla and Herbicide Updates

Public Notice

To control the growth of the invasive aquatic plant Hydrilla (Hydrilla verticillata) in the Cayuga Inlet, an application of the aquatic herbicide Aquathol-K (active ingredient: endothall) will occur on Tuesday, August 18, 2015. The Cayuga Inlet will be closed to boating and recreation for 24hrs in conjunction with this treatment. Closure of the inlet provides for the safety of the public AND the herbicide applicators, and provides for the best possible conditions for effective treatment.

NOTE: In the event of inclement weather/water conditions, treatment will be postponed until the next soonest suitable treatment day*

Aquathol-K application will be conducted using airboat, johnboat, and backpack application equipment within the Cayuga Inlet treatment zone, which includes: Cayuga Inlet main channel from the DEC fish ladder north to Allan Treman State Marine Park boat launch, Cascadilla Creek west of Rt. 13, Six Mile Creek west of Rt. 13, Linderman Creek east of Rt. 89, and the Allan Treaman State Marine Park boatyard.

The water use restrictions associated with Aquathol-K are:

·         Swimming and bathing are prohibited for 1 day after application according to Special Local Need Label # EPA SLN No. NY-080004.

·         Animal and Livestock watering is prohibited for 14 days after application.

·         Use of water for human consumption is prohibited when concentrations of the active ingredient (endothall) are greater than 50 ppb (parts per billion) in the treated water. Be advised that consuming water directly from any lake or surface stream is never recommended*

Please refer to stophydrilla.org for a map of the treatment area and additional information on the herbicide.

The Hydrilla Task Force monitors herbicides levels through extensive water quality sampling and plant community monitoring. This helps to ensure public safety and the health of the aquatic plant community. Water quality monitoring results will be provided to the public through the Tompkins County Health Department website (http://www.tompkinscountyny.gov/health) and on the official Hydrilla Project website (www.Stophydrilla.org).

If you have questions or need additional information, please visit the Stophydrilla.org website OR contact the Hydrilla Program Manager, James Balyszak (Phone: 607-254-1715 or Email:stophy...@gmail.com).

Thank you for your continued interest and support!

Sincerely,
James Balyszak and Sharon Anderson
