When roaming freely, a herd of horses will align their bodies in relation to one another to communicate and create support, Kim explained. After some time inside the pasture, she suggested we gently approach them, then model our own behavior after theirs.

But our senses ground us within our own animal bodies and tune us into intuition. As Reli passed, I sensed an invitation. Without caution, I pressed one hand against his torso. I took in through my own body the warmth and strength of his. In return, I let him feel my own steady presence.

Vintage Oaks is a privately owned horse farm dedicated to the care and appreciation of horses. Our goal is to teach people of all ages to appreciate, and enjoy, the beauty and strength of these animals.

From the novice to the experienced, we teach riders of all levels at Vintage Oaks. Our riders have competed at local, state and national competitions, finding success at every level. The instruction we provide goes deeper than riding, we teach our students how to care and provide for their mounts, which builds a strong bond between horse and rider.

A few yearsago, a property came up for sale in the Foothills of Alberta. The land is rolling, covered in a thickblanket of spruce trees, and the snow-capped mountains in the west glisten likerough diamonds on clear blue days. The littlecreek running through it is frequently visited by deer, moose, and in thespring, a fox and her kits. Best of all? It has a small barn, large riding arena, and acres of grass paddocks for horses. While I had no intention of ever moving from the big city, the propertymet my lifelong dream of someday owning a horse property and looking after myown horses.

With the dealclosed, the moving truck packed, and the horses loaded, I arrived on a snowyMarch day to begin my new adventure. While I should have been overwhelmed withexcitement driving into the property with my horses in tow, instead I felt anoverwhelming sense of terror. While I had owned horses my whole life, I hadalways boarded them at local boarding facilities. I had never actually cared for a horse all on my own. Afterall, I was a city girl!

Now I had toworry about veterinary and farrier care, manure management, shelters, fresh waterduring the heat of summer and the dead of winter, and most importantly, feedingthem! Oddly, my dream had failed toinclude all the practicalities. Instead, I just imagined my horses grazinglazily in a lush green meadow.

With this inmind, I decided to take the leap and invite my first boarder to share theproperty with me. Her mare was easy tolook after, and immediately fit in with my group of mares. The owner was equally easy to be around. Weplanned our rides together, and even brought in a trainer to prepare us for theshow season. Sometimes we talked forhours in the barn while we groomed our horses and cleaned up, hardly riding atall. Before too long, another ladycontacted me looking for a place to board. She brought her mare and gelding over and they also fit in as thoughthey had always been part of the group. She was also a jumper, which led to thethree of us not just riding together, but competing at shows together. Morethan friends, our own little team.

Over time themix has changed. My first boarder gotmarried and moved her horse to a place to lease it as she no longer had thetime to ride. The second lady moved to abarn where her horses could be in full-time training with a professional. Overtime, others have come and gone for their own reasons. Sure, some of my boarders have been more high-needsthan others, requiring daily, or even hourly texts and photos to ensure all iswell. Others have had the confidencethat I knew what I was doing and their horse was well-cared for, even insubzero weather and 3 feet of blowing snow.

Miller Horse Farm boasts the finest full-service boarding facility with the highest standard care and management for each horse. We have large grass pastures for horse turnout and two arenas are available 7 days a week.

This ride & sip is literally the best thing that has happen to me this year. The staff is literally the best and so friendly. When you first get their you will go over basic ride skill and then head toward the winery which is about a 30 mins ride. Once you get there you have about 30 mins to drink as much as you want. Did I mention you get a free bottle of wine? Great place to take a date and make a statement.

This was a Father's Day surprise for my husband. It was an amazing first time experience for my boys. The staff was friendly and made everyone of us feel comfortable. Joy is super professional and makes the experience unforgettable. The horses are all well trained and people friendly. This was a one hour horse ride and we got to take pictures after. We recommend this place for every occasion and you will not be disappointed. So much FUN!

I love horses and was in town for a work trip with two of my co-workers. We got to spend the afternoon with Joy and her family. I rode Lonestar an awesome paint horse. He was a champ on the trail and it was amazing to relax and unwind. It was a great experience that felt like a piece of home away from home, definitely recommend!!

The Horse Farm is a teaching and research facility. It is also home to a herd of award-winning Standardbred horses that compete in harness racing events throughout the state. In addition to our thriving breeding program, research at the horse farm improves equine nutrition, physiology, reproduction, and parasitology. But our students say the best part of the horse farm is our Foal Watch program. Students monitor pregnant mares round the clock, help bring foals into the world, and watch them take their first wobbly steps.
