Description: Kylyn APIA Arts and Culture Festival is a multi-day inaugural arts festival that aims to enrich the cultural life of Ann Arbor by presenting the cutting edge of Midwest APIA Arts and Culture. The festival provides a platform for APIA/BIPOC artists to showcase their creativity and talent, integrating local arts resources and highlighting the rich and diverse interdisciplinary arts community in Ann Arbor, Metro Detroit, and beyond. Kylyn also features a variety of educational and community-building activities, such as workshops, panel discussions, and performances, that engage the public and foster a greater understanding of APIA culture and experiences. Description: The Ann Arbor District Library is recognizing AAPI Heritage Month throughout May with a variety of in-person and online events, along with curated content and resources suitable for all ages, exploring the cultural heritage and contributions of the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities.

Location: Detroit Institute of Art, 5200 Woodward Ave, Detroit, MI 48202
Description: Celebrate the voices and stories of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities at the DIA throughout May in honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! The DIA partners with AAPI community groups and professional artists to showcase a blend of traditional and contemporary dance, musical performances, art, and more. This year’s celebration and performances include Bengali, Burmese, Chinese, Filipino, Hmong, Indian, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Polynesian, Taiwanese, Thai, and Vietnamese cultures. Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage American Month programs are developed in partnership with the DIA’s auxiliary group Friends of Asian Art and Cultures. All programs are onsite and are free with general museum admission unless otherwise noted ($). Capacity for programs in Rivera Court and Marvin & Betty Danto Lecture Hall is limited. Seating begins 30 minutes before performances start.

Together we will journey through our Asian American communities’ histories via the ingredients and dishes of our ancestors, learn about their contributions to our nation, and honor their legacies by remembering their struggles and triumphs as they built lives and communities in America. Potluck dish contributions are welcome but not required for attendance.

This event will feature a stunning photo exhibit of Lee's work as part of our Vincent Chin commemoration. Water has been revered across time and culture, supporting communities and reviving those who drink from it or live by its sources. This year, we’re introducing a community paddle session where attendees can ride the dragon boats and paddle in the Grand River. We also have paddle boards and kayaks; guests can bring their watercraft. University Alumni Affinity Groups/Detroit Centers
Both the University of Michigan and Michigan State University are developing Asian alumni affinity groups, please let me know if you went to a different college or university (especially in Michigan) which is doing the same. Please contact me at mole...@umich.edu (reply, not reply all) if interested in volunteering for the University of Michigan Asian/Asian American and Pacific Islander Alumni Club. Michigan State University has an Asian Pacific Islander Desi American Spartans alumni group, I recommend contacting their board if interested in working with them. Both the University of Michigan and Michigan State University have Detroit Centers which are very close to Detroit's historic Chinatown, have event spaces which can be rented, and may be good venues to consider having various Asian community events in the neighborhood.
