Stata/MP, Stata/SE, and Stata/BE all run on any machine, but Stata/MP runs faster. You can purchase a Stata/MP license for up to the number of cores on your machine (maximum is 64). For example, if your machine has eight cores, you can purchase a Stata/MP license for eight cores, four cores, or two cores.
I want to buy STATA MP for when I start my faculty job in the fall (so I'm not always reliant on VPN). I notice that the faculty version is more expensive than the student version (perpetual) - should I buy before I graduate, so I can pay the student price? Is there anything I lose by having "student" vs. "faculty" version in the years to come?
Well couldn't one buy it now and then retroactively apply startup funds to it? I ask because I already agreed a startup package of a $ amount with STATA in it, so I figure buying it now will be a way for me to conserve more of my startup $$ (since I could get a perpetual student license rather than a faculty one at a higher price)

And no, I don't want to pirate it, so please don't suggest that. I have STATA budgeted for in my startup package... :-)
I am a college student and my class requires me to use stata. However, being in Corona time I have 2 different places that I work on school work and have 2 computers that I use. I will be the only one using stata on these computers and they will never be used at the same time.
Ok, I see the prices here ( -pricing/) but any workarounds if not enrolled as a student? Also, realistically, which version should one purchase? And, if you buy a cheaper version, but then need a larger dataset, can you upgrade without paying the full price of the better version?
