Katie,

You do not need to have a gmail or any other specific type of email address to be part of a Google Group. What you do need to have is a free Google account, which is easy to set up and carries no obligations. The list manager can then extend an invitation to join the Group, which non-gmail people then have to accept. (If you do have a gmail account, your acceptance into the Group is automatic.)

Yvonne and I manage a couple of different Google Groups, and it is a common misconception that you need to have a gmail account. It does make it easier, but it is not required. In fact, Yvonne does not have a gmail account!

From my experience, at this time a Google account is not needed for about 75 % of the people. Why it won't accept the remaining 25 per cent is a mystery to me.

Thanks Mark, to add to this, you have to accept the invitation, and some other providers (yahoo), will typically filter/spam the email, so you have to dig for it.

We have a wide variety of email domains on the list, including yahoo, icloud, comcast, etc.

1) a “free” google account aggregates aggressively all my other google accounts

2) i have a gmail that i don’t check, so that’s useless — and it would aggregate

because th list admin won’t invite people, they want you to use a gmail account which i have but don’t check.  I can’t get it to do to my primary account

i have never been able to get anyone to issue me an invite to my primary (UT) address.   Theories are overly, but the admins don’t do it

Hi,

You could try to join from your primary email address by sending an email from that particular UT email address to:

cavetex+...@googlegroups.com

This used to be a valid way to join, it may still be. The admin would get a message saying "this email address wants to join, approve?"

If you do not want your utexas email linked to Google in any way, then you will not be able to use it for Google Groups. Google Groups would accept that address, but you would have to establish a Google account and use your utexas email for it.

I think you said that you do have a gmail address. Why not have emails that go there (shouldn't be many if you don't use it regularly) automatically forwarded to utexas? That way, you could use it to join Google Groups, and any emails from the Groups would show up in your utexas account. That way you could easily follow traffic on the Groups (not much these days), but you would have to go to your gmail account to make a post or send a reply.

At least you have access through William's old account.

By the way, I asked Google "Can I rename an existing Google Account?", and they said  this:

You can now change your Google Account username (i.e., the part before @gmail.com), which you use to sign in to apps and services like Gmail, Photos, Drive and more. We started rolling this out last year to help your account grow with you.Mar 31, 2026
