High levels of carbon dioxide is a problem for many Texas caves. Below is an announcement of a seminar next week on CO2 in caves. Input from cavers is welcome. If you’re interested, register via the link below.

Hi all,

this is a reminder about the Karst Waters Institute Webinar next Wednesday, May 20.

Although Zenah and I are both scientists, we to some extent are dabbling here.  However, I can guarantee it will be interesting, and we hope very much that as many of you as possible who have looked into these issues will participate in the webinar.

Our purpose is at least two fold:

1 - Provide folks in the caving and karst science community with better awareness and understanding of high CO2 cave atmospheres.

2 - Connect cavers and scientists interested in this phenomenon so that they can combine forces to better understand these atmospheres.

We've already approached a couple of you with specific questions - your responses are much appreciated.

Feel free (and please do) spread the word to other folks interested in the topic.

Also, if you have anything that you might want to share during discussions, by all means do so.  If you have slides/graphics to share/display, that would be great!  It would be valuable to know ahead of time if you would like to share your screen during the discussion after our presentation so that our zoomeister is not caught off guard.

Looking forward to it!

Wil and Zenah Orndorff

Hi everyone,

I've heard rumors that Mielle is doing interesting things in Texas with CO2, and I was fortunate to see Michael last month in Santa Fe.

Zenah and I will be giving a presentation on Wednesday, May 20 (~ 6 - 9 EDT) as part of the Karst Waters Institute Webinar Series.  I'd like to invite y'all to attend.

Best case scenario, after our presentation y'all can weigh in with opinions, theories, results, and hypotheses related to your work involving CO2 in caves/karst.

There is a lot of interest in this topic, as you know.

I'll send the official link to you when the announcement comes out.

I don't have Jay Banner's email, but I figured he might be interested especially since he has done so much work on cave atmospheres.  If someone wants to reach out to Jay and give

As you may recall, Zenah, Sarah, and I were all initially interested mainly due to safety concerns, but our interest has expanded to understanding the causes and processes as well.  Our focus has been on caves where CO2 levels exceed NIOSH exposure standards, but I think the entire spectrum is of interest.

Let me know if you would like to participate. I hope we have a lively round table discussion after the presenation.

Thanks,

Wil
