Thank you for reminding me to post here Bill. This is the edited version of an email I sent our "Caver Lady" lunch group.I just wanted ya'll to know that Gill died ~1:30 Sunday morning. He has had a long slow decline over the past 5+ years, the last three in Memory Care. More recently he had a bad bout of aspiration pneumonia, which was better, but not gone, and he had stopped being able to swallow even water, so no swallowing antibiotic pills/even crushed.. Mentally, he had become less and less interactive, either with just looking at you, or even acknowledging you, and that had become minimal even with his favorite caregivers at the Auberge. Cathy Winfrey and I were faced with the decision of either placing him in Hospice, or have him go through hospitalization for IV antibiotics...only to return to the same situation of aspirating again and repeat. He was adamant that he "did not want to be kept alive just to be alive"...and definitely no feeding tubes of other such means of keeping him alive. Cathy and I agreed that was not the end Gill would want, and she set up Hospice care.A few old friends stopped by to see him Saturday, though he was non-responsive. Yaz Avila stayed the night with him, and contacted Cathy when he died. Cathy and Peter Sprouse are handling the rest. Hospice, and their Chaplain, handled his transfer to the funeral home.He has a lot of old friends to hang out with in "Caver Heaven".Jocie

Beautifully said, Geary, as were the many comments I finished listening to on YouTube. Jay, thank you for recording and posting them for those of us who weren’t there, and especially for younger cavers who didn’t know Gill. I hope they will watch and learn from him as a role model.
In 1980, I was surprised when I was nominated for election as TSA Chair and more surprised when I was elected. I had no skills or experience in such things. At the time, I only knew Gill from some caving events and saw him as someone who was outgoing, irreverent, and funny. I also heard he was a past TSA Chair, so I wrote him for advice. He replied with a 10-page handwritten letter on the function of TSA, its officers, and with wisdom on leadership that I carry and use to this day. I find that when I fail in leadership, its often because I forgot or ignored his advice—or my father’s, who told me to think 10 times before I speak once.
Different caving circles and life paths kept us only as casual friends, but I always greatly valued his taking the time to help me when he didn’t know me at all. While I thanked him immediately for his letter of 46 years ago, I regret never thanking again years later when I could have truly demonstrated and appreciated his positive impact on me.
