Logan Dale McNatt (August 5, 1950 – June 3, 2026)

Our family announces with heavy hearts that Logan McNatt passed away this morning, around 7 a.m. CDT. He departed this mortal coil with his devoted family member, Crystal Kinney, by his side. Logan's passing followed complications related to dementia, the same horrible disease that took many of his family members.
For those that don’t know, Logan was a renowned caver, archaeologist, author, collector, and Texan. A true pun-loving, gifted storyteller whose lifelong dedication to exploration, discovery, and environmental preservation left an enduring legacy in the fields of speleology and Maya cave archaeology.
Throughout his career, he explored at least 338 caves across Texas, New Mexico, Alabama, Mexico, and Belize. In 1972, he was among the original team that discovered and descended into Mexico’s El Sótano del Barro, one of the largest and deepest vertical pits in the world.
In 1993, Logan returned to Texas, where he worked as an archaeologist with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (on the Archeology Survey Team) until his retirement in 2012.
He cultivated friendships wherever he traveled and was beloved by countless people throughout Texas, Belize, and beyond. Known affectionately in Belize as “Logan Mon!” and to family and friends as “LowGun,” he will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, sharp wit, generous heart, encyclopedic knowledge, loyalty, and unwavering commitment to the natural world.
Logan’s legacy lives on through the caves he explored, the archaeological papers he authored, the research he advanced, the stories he shared, and the many lives he touched. His brother, Randy McNatt, preceded him in death in February 2025. He is survived by his nephew, Eric McNatt; his cousins, Beverly Bormuth, Dawn Manzo, and Crystal Kothmann Kinney; and by a wide circle of friends, colleagues, and fellow explorers who will cherish his memory for years to come.
We will be in touch with plans for a Celebration of Life once we’ve had time to process and handle the details of his wishes.
We are diminished.

Crystal Kothmann Kinney and Eric McNatt.

I am so sad to lose my best friend, but he was suffering and I think he is in a great place now.
