Thanks for doing this Bill.

A note, since this list is archived at google, anyone has read access to it.  I went in and deleted the messages containing your link from the archives.  It's the first time I've had to delete a message like this, some sort of achievement for me :)

And the dropbox link is removed from this reply.

Keep up the good work.
Charles

Bill, I live  6 miles South of Kerrville, TX.

Most of my caving years were spent in central Missouri. Dwight Weaver was in our Lake Ozark Grotto in Missouri.

Russ,

Your name seemed familiar. I lived in Jefferson City, MO, for 23 years. I was the cave biologist for MO Dept of Conservation and I was in the Chouteau Grotto. I knew Dwight Weaver.

Moved back to Georgetown TX in 2021.

Thanks so much, Bill, for the awesome (time-consuming) job of rescanning the guidebook!

Hi Texas cavers,

I recently made a new scan of the 1994 NSS Guidebook, The Caves and Karst of Texas, edited by William R. Elliott and George Veni. And you can get it today.

This new version of the book is very legible and searchable at 600 dpi., with sharp images. See an image of the front cover, attached.

NSS had a low-res pdf of the book on their members-only website, but I don't recommend it.  The images are very grainy. They will replace it soon with my new pdf.

The whole book pdf is 171MB, and includes 371 pp, photos, maps, the large folded maps from the pocket in the back cover, and corrections that we noted in our errata sheet in 1995.

This is still the most comprehensive book on Texas caves, I think, and it ought to be available to researchers and cavers.

Background: To do this project I sacrificed one of my two remaining copies of the book, and had a print shop cut off the spine. I scanned the book on my Epson scanner, which has a duplex document feeder. This took months of scanning and editing. I used two ocr programs that have slightly different technical capabilities, and assembled the book from chapters.

For a limited time, the link to the book in my Dropbox is at:

Let me know if you have difficulty downloading the pdf.

NSS has the copyright, and will be the main distribution point for the book via their NSS members-only guidebooks page. TSS will also make it available to their staff and data managers via their Sharepoint site. I am letting Texas cavers know that they can get it here now. Old-timers who no longer are NSS members can get it.

PLEASE DO NOT POST THIS EMAIL OR THE DROPBOX LINK TO THE BOOK IN PUBLIC, INCLUDING FACEBOOK.

There are some sensitive caves in the book, but no precise locations.

So, I hope this new pdf of the book will be useful!

Thanks,
