Daemon Tools is a free, Windows based disk image emulator software allowing users to directly load an image file onto your computer system from any CD/DVD source under any type of copy protection. Once an image or emulation of a CD/DVD is created you can mount the image on one of the virtual drives and explore the content as if from a CD source, only quicker.
Early versions of Daemon Tools came with support for mounting already created images with advances later on to support full capabilities for creating images in a number of different formats. Further updates included support for compressed and encrypted image formats and capabilities to evade the majority of copy-protection systems around. Later version worked on the GUI to make mounting images easier for beginners and added support CD/DVD/Blu-ray imaging ability with an increase in the number virtual drives with a maximum of 32.
Daemon Tools 3.47 is last version to support Windows 98.
Daemon Tools 4.36 last to support Windows 2000. Daemon Tools later than version 4.36 supports Windows XP/Vista/7. Daemon Tools has a good reputation for stability with the most preferred version being 4.0.
Pros: Easily mount images to virtual drives, support for many format types, light on PC resources.
Cons: Need to reboot after install, ad-ware bundled with version 4.0+, difficult to uninstall.
When you upload software to oldversion.com you get rewarded by points. For every field that is filled out correctly, points will berewarded, some fields are optional but the more you provide the more you will get rewarded!
My guess is it either downloaded the wrong version (maybe a newer version that doesn't work with Windows 98) or something went wrong with the download. So try installing the version Phil used before installing Daemon-Tools.
DAEMON tools was originally a successor of Generic SafeDisc emulator and incorporated all of its features.[10] The program claims to be able to defeat most copy protection schemes such as SafeDisc and SecuROM.[11] It is currently compatible with Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10. DAEMON Tools has a special mode for proper operation of copies of discs with advanced protection (SafeDisc, SecuRom and LaserLock, CDCOPS, StarForce and Protect CD), which are used on some discs with games.[12]
The default file format of DAEMON Tools is Media Data eXtended (MDX). MDX is a disc image file format similar to MDS/MDF images. It supports all of MDS/MDF format features except that all data is in one monolithic file only. The files of these types bear the filename extension of .mw-parser-output .monospacedfont-family:monospace,monospace.mdx.[21]
On 13 February 2012, one of DAEMON Tools components known as MountSpace became a subject of privacy concerns. MountSpace, a service-oriented component gathers and sends information about disc images used in DAEMON Tools to mountspace.com along with users' IP addresses. Although MountSpace can be disabled during installation, it is criticized for transmitting information despite being disabled and lacking a privacy policy.[22][23][24][25] The initial discovery of the concerning issue is attributed to Rafael Rivera of Within Windows blog.[22][24][25]
YASU (Yet Another SecuROM Utility) is a very small tool that works as a SCSI-drive protector. It was created by sYk0 and can be used to hide emulated drives from SecuROM 7 and SafeDisc 4. YASU is a companion program for Daemon Tools and currently being hosted, supported and maintained by the Daemon Tools team. On March 4 of 2009, sYk0 announced development of Omen which is to succeed development of YASU.[26] As of January 2010, development of Omen has been abandoned.[27]
Everyone who has ever tried to mount ISO images knows that DAEMON Tools Lite is free, smart and easy-to-use imaging software. February 26, 2015, the brand-new version of this well-known application hit the web.
DAEMON Tools Lite 5 introduces a new way to mount disc images. It becomes much easier and handier! Let me remind you how DAEMON Tools Lite worked previously. To mount ISO images, you had to perform two steps: create a virtual device first and mount it with a selected file then.
Now everything is pretty simple, cause DAEMON Tools Lite does the whole work. You choose an image to mount and the application creates and emulates a virtual drive. Just mount ISO images and forget about the details!
Talking about how to mount an image with DAEMON Tools Lite, we still have one undiscovered case. As you may know, some images of protected discs should be mounted to SCSI virtual devices. To emulate SCSI drives, I need to install SPTD driver (be sure that you have also checked this option during the installation). What should I do next?
By default, all images are mounted to DT virtual drives. They work faster and are more preferable. To mount some secured images, I should choose SCSI. How to mount an image to SCSI virtual device? Just check this option from the image's contextual menu in Images catalog:
VHD and VMDK files represent a virtual hard disk drive and are used by virtual machines commonly. Now you don't need a special software to look inside the virtual representation of the hard disk. Just use DAEMON Tools Lite and mount them as ordinary images.
TrueCrypt file is an encrypted container with data you want to keep protected. You can create TrueCrypt files using DAEMON Tools Ultra or DAEMON Tools Pro. And now, you can manage TrueCrypt files with DAEMON Tools Lite too.
Are you excited about the next generation of Microsoft operating system? I have the preview and can use DAEMON Tools Lite on it too! With the new version, the application works on all versions from Windows XP to Windows 10, cause we are proud to keep abreast with IT innovations.
At the end, I'd like to remind you about the types of licenses available for DAEMON Tools Lite. There are three of them: Paid Personal, Paid Commercial and Free one. Personal License includes not only the application itself, but also all its forthcoming updates, can be installed on 3 PCs, guarantees 24/7 support and removes all third-party offers from the installation process.
Commercial License will be interesting for business owners, and Free License contains third-party offers, which you can skip during the installation, and doesn't guarantee the full support. You can learn more about DAEMON Tools Lite licenses in my previous post.
The download page for Daemon Tools Lite Commercial (the free one) version 4.30.4 says that Windows 7 Beta is supported (SPTD 1.58). However the Pro Standard and Advanced versions say Windows 7 is "fully" supported and uses SPTD 1.60.
I'd recommend just scrapping Daemon Tools and going with Virtual Clone Drive (freeware) -- you won't have to deal with any adware/toolbars or lite/standard/advanced versions, and it works great on Windows 7, without any compatibility warnings.
I have runed DT on Win7 Beta, RC and now I run them on RTM. I happend to be able to test it on both 32 and 64bits versions - no issues on any of the installations. Just remember to uncheck all the garbage during installation :)
I have only noticed one issue and that is a dialog from Microsoft telling me that Daemon Tools is not compatible and might cause issues. Ignoring this dialog has let me use it yo mount all sorts of images.
With Windows 10 version 1903, Microsoft has implemented several crucial kernel changes that have significant influence on many apps and driver-based software. After deep investigation of the upcoming features, we came to the conclusion that it is impossible to make STPD driver compatible with the new operating system version and so will stop its support starting from 1903.
Besides SCSI and IDE drives, DAEMON Tools emulates DT drives. This type of virtual devices is chosen by default, and if you do not adjust the advanced mounting options usually, you probably have never used anything besides DT drive at all. DT helps for mounting all virtual disc images and archives we support, it is much faster than any other device type and will replace SCSI and IDE fully. You are welcome to use it in DAEMON Tools.
Windows 10 version 1903 started rolling out in May, 2019. Also, it is available through Insider Preview Program from early March, 2019. Some older versions with cumulative updates installed are also affected.
In case you still want to use SCSI and IDE drives, there is a way to make them work on the new OS. Download and launch this file that changes two registry entries and reboot your PC. Once you start DAEMON Tools Lite, you will see SCSI and IDE related features. Please note that this process disables default Windows protection introduced in the May update that keeps the system safe from vulnerabilities.
