I've made some progress and now I get the following during make test

Searching for pil
No local packages or download links found for pil
error: Could not find suitable distribution for Requirement.parse('pil')

I did some googling and found
easy_install --find-links http://www.pythonware.com/products/pil/ Imaging

so I tried that and it errors with
_imagingft.c:73:10: fatal error: 'freetype/fterrors.h' file not found

freetype is installed, so I'm not quite sure what's going on now. If it matters I'm running 10.10 Yosemite.

I was having almost the identical issue until I did a hard reset.  The commands I ran were (from inside the cauliflowervest root):

git clean -d -f
git reset
--hard HEAD
git pull

Afterwards, make test worked flawlessly.

In your Git client working directory (which resulted from "git clone ...").   The same directory with the Makefile file.
