Dear all,
This is Claire Li from BLCU English Debating Society (BLCU EDS). On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I would like to sincerely invite you to participate in the 7th SAID-BLCU-BHU BP Debate Tournament 2011. This will be the 7th Year in which the BLCU EDS is holding its annual debate tournament with SAID, and the Second Year we are jointly organising it with Beihang University. The BLCU EDS is very proud to organise this debate event as our contribution to excellence in competitive academic debating in China and looks forward to seeing many new debaters who are just starting out in debating, and many familiar faces in the China debating circuit to celebrate good debating with us.
With the personal guidance of Mr Loke Wing Fatt, President of the Society for Associated Inter-Tertiary Debaters (SAID) and the Honorary Life-Time Advisor of the BLCU EDS, we have successfully organised the annual tournament for 6 consecutive years. Last year, in order to provide a better competition experience, we joint hands with Beihang University to provide you with Pre-Tournament training sessions and we will continue to do so, so that debaters can learn from Mr Loke and his able Co-Trainers.
This tournament will again mark the beginning of your debating life in a New Semester in 2011/12, as well as being a great opportunity of learning with all the top debaters and ex-champions we have invited as our judges. We promise high quality adjudication, sincere hospitality and great social interactions for all of you.
Below are the Tournament Details:
1. Dates of Tournament: 16th September to 18th September 2011, in BLCU.
2. Chief Adjudicator: Mr. Loke Wing Fatt of SAID and the Honorary Life-time Adviser of BLCU EDS,
3. Registration Fee Per Team: Each Team of 2 debaters will be charged a Registration Fee of 200RMB
4. Registration Fee for Adjudicators: Each Adjudicator will pay a Registration Fee of 100RMB
5. N minus 1 Rule for Accompanying Adjudicators: For universities which are registering more than 1 team, the N minus 1 Rule will apply. ( This means that if you are sending 1 team, you do not need for an accompanying adjudicator. If you send 2 teams, 1 accompanying adjudicator, who is a full-time student from your university, must be registered. If you send 3 teams, you need to register 2 adjudicators. and so on.) If teams cannot get enough adjudicator(s) to come, you will have to pay 200RMB so that BLCU/BHU/SAID will get you the requisite adjudicator(s). This is a normal international debate tournament practise to ensure that there all teams contribute to the pool of adjudicators needed to hold a debate tournament. The adjudicators you bring, if they are NOT full-time students from your university, must be approved by Mr Loke Wing Fatt to ensure that no universities will bring unqualified persons simply to "make up the numbers' and to meet the requirement of the N minus 1 Rule for accompanying adjudicators.
We strongly encourage all universities to send ex-debaters as adjudicators to help us make the adjudication pool qualitatively strong so that all debate teams will get fair judgement and will learn much from good judges.
6. Registration Method: Please write an email to blcu...@163.com (中间有个下划线), and ask for the Registration Form.
7. Deadline for Registration: The deadline for registration is 9th Sept 2011.
8. Tournament Capacity: This Tournament will accept a maximum of 80 Teams. Teams are advised to register quickly to ensure you have a chance to debate as we will accept teams on a first-come-first-serve basis.
9. Team Capacity Per University: Each University is allowed to register a maximum of 6 Teams. This is to ensure we have a diverse number of teams from different universities. But universities can “reserve” more team places so that, in the event we do not have 80 teams, we will allow these reserve teams to participate. We will inform universities which have made “reservations for more teams” by 9th Sept if these extra teams will be able to debate.
10. Breaking Teams: The top 16 teams will “break” into the Quarter-Finals.
